The Alden Biesen Yellow Trail is considered a moderate to challenging hike. It covers approximately 16.2 km with an ascent of about 177 meters. The terrain is largely unpaved, featuring rolling hills, stream valleys, and sunken lanes, which can be muddy or rutted after rain. Good physical condition and sturdy footwear are recommended.
The trail starts and ends at the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen. Parking is available at the estate. You can find detailed information on parking facilities on the official Alden Biesen website or local tourism sites like visitlimburg.be.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Alden Biesen Yellow Trail. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially when passing through nature reserves like De Molenbeemd or near agricultural fields and orchards, to protect local wildlife and crops.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-May) is particularly stunning when the orchards are in bloom and marsh marigolds create a yellow carpet in the Demervallei. Autumn (September-October) offers vibrant fall colors. Summer can be pleasant, but be prepared for sun exposure in open fields. Winter hiking is possible, but some sections might be very muddy or slippery.
Hiking the Alden Biesen Yellow Trail itself does not require a permit or entrance fee. Access to the grounds of the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen is generally free, though there might be fees for specific exhibitions or guided tours within the castle or gardens. Always check the official Alden Biesen website for the latest information.
You'll experience a diverse range of terrain, including rolling hills, vast agricultural fields, stream valleys, and expansive orchards. Significant portions are unpaved, featuring deeply worn 'sunken lanes' and natural paths. Some sections, especially after wet weather, can have deep ruts, so sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are advisable.
The trail offers a blend of history and nature. You'll start and end at the impressive Alden Biesen Commandery (also known as Alden Biesen Castle), with its historic gardens. Along the way, you'll pass through the scenic Weerterbosje Orchard, the biodiverse De Molenbeemd Nature Reserve, and enjoy views of the Demer Valley. A notable turning point is the Wine Castle Genoels-Elderen, offering a unique cultural stop.
Yes, the Alden Biesen Yellow Trail is one of several marked routes originating from the Alden Biesen estate. It also intersects with sections of other trails such as the Via Limburgica, Kalverpad, Streek-GR Haspengouw, and the GR 128 Vlaanderenroute (hoofdtraject).
Due to its length (over 16 km) and hilly, unpaved terrain, the Alden Biesen Yellow Trail is generally not recommended for beginners or families with very young children. It requires a good level of fitness. Shorter, less challenging routes are available in the Alden Biesen area for those seeking an easier experience.
While the trail itself is primarily natural, the starting and ending point at the Grand Commandery Alden Biesen offers facilities, including potential cafes or restaurants. The Wine Castle Genoels-Elderen, located roughly mid-hike, also provides an opportunity for refreshments and wine tasting. It's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks, especially on warmer days.
The trail showcases the rich biodiversity of the Haspengouw region. You'll encounter extensive high-stem orchards, ancient 'sunken lanes' that are biodiversity hotspots, and the wet grasslands of the Demervallei and Molenbeemd nature reserve. These areas are home to rare plants like thin-spiked wood-sedge and remote sedge, and unique fauna such as the Roman or vineyard snail. Birdwatching opportunities are also present.
The Alden Biesen landscape walk, on the eastern slope of the Demer Valley, takes you past the standard orchards of the Alden Biesen estate, vast fields on the plateaus, stream valleys with their wet micro-nature, and stunning panoramas. The Alden Biesen Commandery stands proudly in the heart of the area. This monumental castle site has left a lasting mark on the surroundings and the history of the region. A varied walk between the Alden Biesen Commandery and the Genoelselderen Wine Castle. Starting points: * Alden Biesen Commandery, Kasteelstraat 6, 3740 Bilzen * Genoelselderen Wine Castle, Kasteelstraat 9, 3770 Riemst More Haspengouw Landscape Walks: https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/collection/2311319/-wandelen-langs-haspengouwse-landschappen
Start at the Alden Biesen car park, spacious car park. Food/drink options (check opening times). Is well marked with yellow color. Can be done in 2 directions. Beautiful walk, beautiful nature 🥰🤩 Didn't know for a moment whether I should take more pictures. Or walk further, so beautiful. Lots of hollow and slow roads, beautiful nature. Blissfully enjoyed. Through the villages, to the fields. You can also take an extra tour of the commandery through the English gardens, in the courtyard,...
From Genoelselderen Castle with its wine estate to the Commanderie Alden Biesen via meadows, forests and open agriculture. Nice walk.
Today we opted for the 16.2 km long landscape walk (signposted with the yellow line) starting at the beautiful Grand Commandery Alden Biesen in Bilzen. Of course, this walk also includes a visit to the beautiful heritage site. Unfortunately, the wine castle of Genoelselderen was closed today, but the beautiful Molenbeemd nature reserve made up for it all. A beautiful walk: The Greenspot Alden Biesen, on the eastern slope of the Demer valley, takes you past the standard orchards of the domain of Alden Biesen, extensive fields on the plateaus, stream valleys with wet micronature and beautiful panoramas.
Nice round, a bit too much paved paths, but also many great paths and 2 Kasteels. Many paths without shadows.
