This route was planned by komoot.
This cycling tour covers approximately 64.4 kilometers (40 miles) and typically takes around 3 hours and 47 minutes to complete. However, an alternative route for 'Stage 8' is about 56.5 km, taking around 3 hours and 22 minutes. Plan extra time for breaks, especially if you want to explore places like Schlepzig.
The trail generally features mostly paved surfaces, making it suitable for various skill levels. However, be prepared for some unpaved segments that might be more challenging and could require good fitness. There are even brief sections where you might need to dismount and push your bike. The route has an elevation gain of about 110 meters, so it's not overly strenuous in terms of climbs.
While classified as 'moderate', the tour is largely on paved surfaces, making it accessible. However, some unpaved sections and potential brief dismounts mean it's best for beginners with a reasonable level of fitness. Families with younger children might find the full distance and some terrain challenging, so consider shorter sections or the alternative route.
The tour starts in Lübben. While specific parking details aren't provided, Lübben is a well-known starting point for Spreewald tours, so public parking options should be available in the town center or near the Schlossinsel. For public transport, Lübben (Spreewald) train station is accessible, making it convenient to reach the starting point.
You'll experience diverse and picturesque landscapes, including unique pond landscapes, agricultural fields, and forests of the Spreewald. A significant highlight is the return journey through the Lower Spreewald, passing the charming village of Schlepzig. Here, you can explore a 250-hectare pond landscape, home to rare plant species, swans, ducks, and herons. The final stretch runs alongside the Spree river, leading to the Schlossinsel in Lübben. Don't miss the Schlepzig's country store and the Church and Historic Cemetery Groß Leine.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on public trails within the Spreewald biosphere reserve. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature protection areas. The route passes through the Spreewald, which is a protected landscape, so stay on marked paths.
The Spreewald region is beautiful in spring, summer, and early autumn. Spring offers blooming nature, while summer provides warm weather for cycling and enjoying the water. Early autumn brings colorful foliage. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions can vary.
While the Spreewald region is generally welcoming to dogs, specific rules may apply in certain protected areas or establishments. On the cycling paths themselves, dogs on a leash are usually permitted. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash, and that you clean up after them. Be mindful of other cyclists and wildlife.
Yes, the village of Schlepzig is a recommended stop for a longer break, offering the Spreewald brewery and resort, a Spreewald distillery, and numerous small eateries. You'll likely find other cafes and pubs in the villages you pass through, especially closer to Lübben and Goyatz. For accommodation, Lübben and other towns in the Spreewald offer various options.
Yes, this route shares sections with several other paths. Notably, it covers parts of the Historische Stadtkerne Route 6 Ost (42%), the Gurkenradweg (Nord- und Ostring) (34%), and the European walking route E10, Germany, Brandenburg (23%). You'll also find smaller segments overlapping with the Spreeradweg and the Radweg Berlin-Dresden.
Given the moderate difficulty and potential for unpaved sections, we recommend bringing a well-maintained touring bicycle, a helmet, water, snacks, and basic repair tools. Wear comfortable cycling attire suitable for the weather. Don't forget sunscreen, insect repellent (especially near water), and a camera to capture the scenic Spreewald landscape. A small backpack for essentials is also useful.
Unfortunately, I didn't look properly when I was planning quickly. The first part from Lübben to Schwielochsee wasn't that exciting. But when I got to the lake, I was rewarded with lovely places to stop for a break in an idyllic location. Look at the water and enjoy. From here on, it got much better, a really nice Spreewald tour. Partly on the Paul Gerhardt Weg and a section of the Gurkenradweg.
Today, after having the choice, we went to the Spreewald with Cora. The route was a short-term plan from yesterday. Komoot's AI could be better, but it's good. I still can't take photos outside of the lock screen, but they're already working on it. Even inside, it only works if you hold the phone still after taking the picture. But that's another topic. Today we headed towards Lübben. The first 18 km weren't great in terms of the route. We drove a lot on busy country roads. It really wasn't exciting. We stopped at the small Schwielochsee and ate the food we'd brought with us - kohlrabi and watermelon. We wanted to re-plan at first. Since the route wasn't great, we looked at how we could continue. Unfortunately, things didn't really go any differently than planned. But in retrospect, that's a good thing, because from then on the tour got nice. The next stop was Schlepzig. Cora had been there before and showed me a highly-premier whisky distillery - Stork - and then we went on to the Spreewald brewery. The beer is recommended, or I liked it because I was there. When we continued on after more than an hour, we just drove along the water. We were really lucky with the weather for the trip. There was another town festival in Lübben, but I was there with Cora last year by chance. There is always a Spreewald barge parade. If you ignore the first part of the trip, the route was really beautiful.
