This route was planned by komoot.
This route is rated as a moderate gravel ride. It requires good fitness and advanced riding skills, corresponding approximately to an STS S2 technical difficulty level. Some segments are unpaved and can be challenging, so it's not ideal for absolute beginners.
The loop starts and ends in Würzburg. While specific parking details aren't provided, Würzburg offers various parking options. The starting point is also easily accessible by public transport, which is a practical advantage for cyclists.
The 77.0 km loop features a variety of surfaces. The majority is paved (64.1 km asphalt, 7.23 km other paved sections). You'll also encounter 3.30 km of unpaved sections, 2.54 km of singletrack, 1.43 km of cobblestones, and a small amount of compacted gravel. This varied terrain means some segments can be unpaved and challenging.
You can expect picturesque riverside views as the trail follows the Main River. The route also takes you through charming villages, extensive vineyards characteristic of the Franconian wine region, colorful meadows, and areas with old fruit trees.
Notable landmarks include the historic Old Main Bridge Kitzingen with its distinctive Falterturm, and the impressive Würzburg Residence (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Würzburg. You'll also pass through the charming Dettelbach Old Town and enjoy the Scenic Road to Kürnach.
Yes, the route intersects with several well-known paths. Significant portions overlap with the EV4 Germany and the Main-Radweg, Abschnitte 1 bis 9. You'll also find sections that are part of the Saar-Mosel-Main [Miltenberg - Kitzingen] and the 2FrankenRadweg, among others.
While there's no specific restriction mentioned, generally, well-behaved dogs on a leash are permitted on public cycling paths in Germany. Please ensure your dog is comfortable with varied terrain and other cyclists, and always clean up after your pet.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to cycle this route. While parts of the broader region are within Naturpark Steigerwald, cycling on designated paths is generally free and accessible to the public. Always respect local regulations regarding nature protection.
The best time to gravel bike this route is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant for cycling, and the vineyards are lush. Avoid peak summer heat if possible, and be prepared for cooler temperatures and potential rain in spring and autumn.
Yes, as the route passes through charming villages and wine towns like Kitzingen and Würzburg, you'll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and traditional taverns (Heckenwirtschaften) where you can stop for refreshments and local Franconian specialties.
For this moderate gravel ride, we recommend bringing a well-maintained gravel bike, appropriate cycling attire, a helmet, sufficient water and snacks, a repair kit (including spare tubes and a pump), navigation tools (like a GPS device or smartphone with the route loaded), and sun protection. Given the varied terrain, comfortable and sturdy cycling shoes are also advisable.
Main circuit that I borrowed from Komoot. Got a bit lost in between. The sections in the wine villages were very beautiful, of course. The section without the Main was almost even more beautiful, you could see far from above. Only through Würzburg is it not so relaxing to cycle, lots of traffic, lots of construction sites where the cycle paths are closed.... I am always amazed by the southern flair in Mainfranken, a corner that I don't get to very often...
