Get up early and then walk around at sunrise before breakfast. Start and end point: house 12 (Marsh endive)

Walked this route in a strong southwest wind. Put on boots so you can also walk over the washovers. At sunset, thousands of starlings fly from all sides and give an impressive spectacle above the island before they settle down in a piece of reed land near the Diving Duck viewing hut to spend the night.

With a clipper from Lelystad to the Markerwadden for a walk there. Threatening skies and wild waves. Quite a bit of wind, but really enjoyed it! An adventure with a golden edge 😁

Of all the Wadden Islands, I had never visited this one before. That makes sense, as the Marker Wadden have only existed for about 10 years and have only been truly accessible for less time. From Lelystad, we board the ferry to the main island, the only one accessible to the public. We enjoy a cup of coffee at the visitor center and then start the longest walk the island has to offer: the coastal route. Along the way, we stop regularly for a photo opportunity or to gaze through our binoculars. It is teeming with birds here, from Spoonbills to Oystercatchers, Avocets, and many other birds. It is a true bird paradise with several bird hides, although you can already see most birds outside the hides. With some time pressure, we eventually return to the ferry, because as beautiful as it is, we want to go home again. Next time, we would love to spend a night in one of the accommodations the island has to offer.
