The Mürren Bike Trail often starts or passes through Lauterbrunnen. You can park your car in Lauterbrunnen, which serves as a gateway to the car-free village of Mürren. From Lauterbrunnen, you have options to take a tram up to Mürren to begin your ride, or you can embark on a significant climb directly from the valley.
This trail is rated as difficult. While some sections are technically easy and visually stunning, you should expect significant ascents on asphalt, challenging gravel roads, and technical singletrack with roots and rocky sections. Some descents, like the one from Gimmelwald to Stechelberg, are steep and require good braking skills. An overall 'hard' physical rating is common for routes in this area due to the elevation changes.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll ride on wider hiking trails, asphalt roads, forest roads, and gravel sections. Expect technical singletrack, especially on descents, which can include roots and rocky patches. Some parts, particularly on the 'Mountain View Trail', might even require you to push or shoulder your bike for short distances. Be aware of shared sections with hikers and occasional farm vehicles.
The trail offers breathtaking views of the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, along with glaciers. You'll pass through fields of flowers, green alpine meadows, and witness spectacular waterfalls, especially in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Don't miss the Panorama Trail Lauterbrunnen and the View of Mittelberg for particularly striking vistas.
While the trail itself doesn't explicitly prohibit dogs, it's important to remember that you'll be sharing paths with hikers and potentially farm vehicles. Given the challenging terrain and steep sections, ensure your dog is fit for such an adventure. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in shared areas and near livestock, and be mindful of other trail users.
The best time to ride is generally from late spring to early autumn. Early summer offers accessible rides with stunning visuals. To avoid heavy hiker traffic, especially on popular sections like the 'Mountain View Trail', consider starting your tour in the early morning or late afternoon, or riding during the off-season and on weekdays.
No specific permit or entrance fee is required to ride the Mürren Bike Trail itself, as it is part of the public trail network within the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area. However, if you use any cable cars or trams to access parts of the trail, those will have their own fares. Always respect local regulations and trail etiquette to preserve this unique natural environment.
Yes, the Mürren Bike Trail intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections that overlap with the Lauterbrunnen - Schilthornbahn, Jungfrau-Marathon, Stechelberg / Rütti - Schilthornbahn, and the Via Alpina. It also shares parts with the Grütsch-Trail and the Panoramaweg, offering diverse route options.
Yes, you'll find opportunities to stop at various restaurants along the routes in the Mürren area for refreshments. Additionally, bike shops are available in the region for any necessary repairs or assistance, ensuring you're well-supported during your ride.
To truly enjoy the Mürren Bike Trail and its surrounding routes, consider starting your ride early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This strategy helps you avoid the busiest times for hikers, especially on shared paths, allowing for a more serene and unobstructed experience of the stunning alpine scenery. Also, be prepared for varied conditions and always check local weather forecasts.
Beyond the panoramic views, look out for the Panorama Trail Lauterbrunnen for incredible vistas. The descent from Gimmelwald to Stechelberg is a memorable, albeit steep, singletrack experience. You'll also find a challenging Singletrack to Stechelberg that adds to the adventure.
A very nice, oh what = super tour always with the most beautiful views! Definitely take the descent / trail from Mürren to Stechelberg! 👍🏻
Perfect weather and temperatures, tourists, well, it was the holiday season and the Lauterbrunnen Valley was very busy. The parking lots in Lauterbrunnen were all occupied, so I started my tour in Stechelberg at the gondola lift. The hiking trails were very well frequented and I therefore bypassed almost all of them on the road. It doesn't matter, the view of the mountains is always impressive. I enjoyed it.
The real idea was to drive to the Birg intermediate station (last station before Schilthorn). However, the path was too much of a good thing😜 very steep, unpaved with rough stones and the weather above was cloudy and cold. Thus made the normal circuit. It was also fun. Especially the part from Gimmelwald to Stechelberg is🤩
A strenuous tour with some extremely steep passages before Gimmelwald, but still a good way to escape mass tourism, at least temporarily.
Start in good weather in Lauterbrunnen at the parking garage. Height is quickly gained and the triumvirate emerges more and more. These three giants Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are impressive. In order to enjoy the pleasure at a higher altitude, the "Mürren 450" tour was modified and moved up by around 150 meters. The path was largely marked S0. Unfortunately that was not the case. A lot of debris had to be added, but the scenery made up for a lot. Shortly above the Almendhubel the path turns over the cannon barrel to the Bietenlücke. A few more meters of altitude were then covered on the e-bike, but it was really no longer possible to pedal any further due to the enormous steepness. Then continue on foot to below the bidding gap. The snow there was too sulky to continue. So back to the bikes and continuing along the magnificent route via Mürren, Gimmelwald and Stechelberg back to Lauterbrunnen.
