Wäller Tour Druidenstein-Wanderweg – Kirchen (Sieg)

As mentioned in the description above, we took the marked route via the Ottoturm to the stunning Offenhausen Landscape Cinema, up to the 517-meter-high Windhahn, and finally to the impressive Druid Stone. We didn't walk the actual Druid Trail, of course, but we did the marked circular route with many sections of the Druid Trail. A highly recommended tour, because on the one hand, the area offers a truly diverse range of paths, stunning views from the hills, and a great highlight around every corner. Whether you start by hiking through a narrow stone tunnel or the enormous Freusburg Mill, all the way to the Stations of the Cross in front of the Druid Stone. The highlights, however, are definitely the Otto Tower with its magnificent views, the Druid Stone, and what we particularly enjoyed – the Offhausen Landscape Cinema. There, we took a relaxing break on the benches and enjoyed the sun and nature. The Druid Stone is the icing on the cake. A truly incredible basalt formation and an incredible !! 25 million years old!! 😯 We definitely recommend it to everyone! In good weather, I climbed the Druid Stone and was able to see into the distance from there. A great day with wonderful weather and beautiful, lush vegetation. Have a nice Tuesday everyone 🙋🏻‍♂️

There are different lengths to choose from. Those who like it leisurely can opt for the one with a length of only around 6 km With a length of 10km, the Ottoturm hiking trail is a bit more demanding, and the Druidenstein hiking trail described here leads through the beautiful surroundings over a total of 16km. The start and end of the hikes is the car park directly at the train station in Kirchen. From here it first goes through the city for a while, then via the Sieg to the Freusburger Mühle. From the former mill, it then continues sharply to the right, with a view over Freusburg, until just before the Hardtkopf sports field. Here at the sports field, the Mühlen hiking trail continues straight ahead, the Ottoturm and Druidenstein hiking trails turn left, and you hike along the outskirts of Kirchen and uphill, along some beautiful trails, to the so-called Ottoturm. The newly built lookout tower offers wonderful panoramic views over the Westerwald and the Bergisches Land, which you should enjoy enough. From the tower it then goes on almost level for a while before it soon goes up towards the 517m high Windhahn. The Windhahn is the highest point of this hike. After the ascent, you hike towards the namesake and highlight of this hike, the Druidenstein. Here you will also find the very popular Druidensteig, a 75 km long hiking trail from Freusburg to the Marienstatt monastery near Hachenburg. The Druid Stone is around 25 million years old and owes its special shape to the rising magma that formed the northernmost part of the basaltic Westerwald here. The up to 15m high pillars that form the Druid Stone are bundled like the logs in a charcoal kiln. From the Druidenstein you now walk down the "Way of the Cross" to Herkersdorf. In Herkersdorf the path leads past the beautiful church and further up through the village to the hill "Auf der Sole". A stage of the Natursteig Sieg was planned. When researching the stages, I came across this circular tour and changed my mind. And I have to say I have no regrets. From the train station in Kirchen it's a constant climb - but with a moderate incline. Through many wooded areas and along wild meadows. At a nice rest area, it then goes up the Way of the Cross to the national geotope Druidenstein. An interesting basalt cone. From there it goes a little further up and you have a great view - today also foresight. Now it's only downhill. First you pass the Otto Tower. After 102 steps a nice all-round view. The descent is much sunnier than the ascent. Fewer forest paths, or unfortunately the forest is no longer there. But he is always beautiful. You can see the Freusburg (a popular youth hostel - I have childhood memories there 👻😂) Arriving in Kirchen-Freusburg, you pass the Freusburger Mühle and then walk along the Sieg back to the train station. There are some benches and rest areas along the way. Contemplation is only possible in the churches themselves.

Today we went in the land of the druids from Kirchen to the druid hiking trail. The very well signposted path leads from Kirchen through the Siegtal to the Freusburger Mühle, then to the Ottoturm, via the Windhahn to the Druidenstein. From there it goes downhill via the Way of the Cross to Herkersdorf and then again steeply over the hill to Kirchen. The best place to park is in the P+R car park near the train station. We didn't meet any druids today, we didn't track down any Roman legions either, but we did find wild boars in various "material versions". We also discovered a clear, pearly magic potion from an underground refrigerator and finally there was the (wild) pig in a bun to try from our people. 😋 We were all alone at the Druid Stone today.. no druids either, no bubbling magic potion in the copper cauldron, but many nice people we met today told us that even today on clear full moon nights - when the moon in the 3rd th house of the constellation Aquarius, the druids at the druid stone still brew many a mystical magic potion. - We will check that when we get a chance 😀. Who dares, join us...! In any case, the consorts - the socks are now smoking and not the copper cauldron - have long since got their magic potion - a strange, cold brew that also boils in large cauldrons beforehand, but contains no mistletoe, but hops and malt. 🍻 .... And when they have drunk too much of it, they always babble so funny that we no longer understand them at all, and would rather have 4 paws for their stability. Today 🌞 offered itself to take a beautiful hike 🎒🥾 in the neighboring district of Altenkirchen. We hiked the Druidenstein hiking trail, which starts at the train station 🚉 in Kirchen. First it goes through the city along the Siegauen in the direction of the Freusburger Mühle, from here you have a great view of the Freusburg for the first time 🏰. From here it is now steadily uphill and the subsoil changes from asphalt to forest and farm roads. Due to the forests, which were unfortunately partially cut down, there was little shade, but great views. After a good 6km you reach the 18m high Otto Tower, which offers a great 360° view of the entire area. From here it goes to the highest point of the hike, the 517m high Windhahn mountain. Now it's downhill to the next high point and the name of the tour, the Druidenstein natural monument. From here we continue downhill in the direction of Herkersdorf along the Stations of the Cross, which were used today on Good Friday by the believers 🙏✝️ of the place for a procession. After crossing the Imhäuser Bach comes the last ascent before you head down to churches and thus reach the starting point of the tour. Conclusion: A great 👍 hike with plenty of sights that we can wholeheartedly recommend. The route is very well signposted.
