How long does the hike to Hochobir from Eisenkappler Hütte typically take?

The hike from the Eisenkappler Hut to the Hochobir summit is estimated to take about 1.5 hours of pure walking time one way. For the full round trip, including breaks, you should plan for approximately 3 to 3.2 hours.

What is the starting point for this hike, and how do I get there?

The hike begins at the Eisenkappler Hut, which is located at 1,555 meters above sea level. Access to the hut is via a scenic toll road. Please note that the toll is 8 Euro and requires coins for payment.

What is the terrain like on the trail to Hochobir?

The initial ascent from the Eisenkappler Hut follows a proper hiking path, which is stony, steep, and often rich in roots as it winds through a light forest. This section, known as the Eberhard-Klaura-Steig, requires concentration due to natural steps and uneven ground, especially after rain. After about 1.2 km, the path leaves the forest and continues in open terrain for the remaining 2.5 km to the summit.

What kind of views can I expect from the Hochobir summit?

The Hochobir is renowned for being one of Carinthia's most beautiful panoramic mountains. From the summit, you'll be treated to expansive views encompassing the Klagenfurter Becken, the Drau Valley, the Karawanken, Koschuta, and the Steiner Alpen. On exceptionally clear days, it's even possible to see as far as the Grossglockner and the Tauerngletscher.

What is the best time of year to hike to Hochobir?

Spring and early summer are particularly beautiful, as the open landscapes transform into a vibrant 'flower paradise.' The trail is generally accessible during the warmer months, but always check local weather conditions before heading out, especially for mountain hikes.

Are there any historical landmarks or points of interest along the route?

Yes, the route offers several notable points. Near the summit, you'll pass the ruins of the Rainer Schutzhaus, which was originally the first mountain hut in the Karawanken. At the Hochobir Summit Cross, you can also find remnants of the Hannwarte, once the highest meteorological station in Austria-Hungary.

Is the trail from Eisenkappler Hütte to Hochobir suitable for dogs?

The trail is generally considered dog-friendly. However, due to the stony and root-laden paths, especially in the forested sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to such terrain and has appropriate paw protection if needed. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in open areas where wildlife may be present.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for this hike or the Karawanken region?

No specific hiking permits or entrance fees are required for the trail itself. However, please remember that access to the Eisenkappler Hut trailhead is via a toll road, which costs 8 Euro (coins only).

Yes, the route to Hochobir from the Eisenkappler Hütte is part of several official trails. It follows sections of the Panoramaweg Südalpen 09 and Wanderweg 623 for its entire length. It also intersects with parts of the Eisenwurzenweg 08, Wanderweg 608, Karawankenwanderweg, Kärntner Grenzweg, Südalpenweg 03 - Etappe 10, and Via Alpina Purple A10.

Is the hike to Hochobir considered family-friendly?

While classified as moderate and requiring good fitness and sure-footedness, the hike is often described as achievable even for children. It's crucial that children have appropriate hiking shoes due to the stony and root-laden paths. The rewarding panoramic views make it a great family adventure for those with some hiking experience.

From the Eisenkappler hut you start through the forest on the initially somewhat steep path to the tree line. (In early summer you will find a true flower paradise there 😉) Follow the path and after a while you will pass a ruined ruin. From there it is not far to the 2139m high summit of the Hochobir. Once at the top you have a breathtaking view. (be sure to sit down and enjoy 😉). On the way back, the Eisenkappler Hut is a wonderful place to stop for a break.

Have done a tour of this kind for years, it's still possible. The weather didn't cooperate at first, everything was overcast. Later, when we were on the summit, it gradually cleared up and we had the most beautiful view of Rosenthal and the Julian Alps.

The shortest hiking trail leads from the Eisenkappler Hut up to the summit of the Hochobir. Unfortunately it was very foggy during my hike, so I couldn't enjoy any views at all.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnSg7H6ZZRU The Hochobir is climbed once a year if it works out. After Mailo now had to climb the mountain in his immediate vicinity, we set off to see him today, on the spur of the moment. It was time to escape the heat of the valleys. We shortened the way a little and drove up to the Eisenkappler hut. In the forest the heat would have been unbearable. The ascent takes place on well-trodden paths and it was already quite warm in the forest. A pleasant, cool wind was only felt above the tree line. On the Hochobir, of course, you / women / dogs are never alone on the road and that's how it was today. Nevertheless, we both clearly liked it and the Hochobir offers an all-round view that is second to none! Conclusion: Dog and Herrl were thrilled and Mailo can now book another peak on his touring account!

I started much too late at the Eisenkappler hut. After a quick ascent, I reached the summit in time for sunset and met my two buddies. The distant view was perfect, in the photos you can see Triglav, Dobratsch, Hohe Warte and even the Großglockner. After sunset we stayed at the summit for a while until the last light of the blue hour passed.

https://youtu.be/E-oeSpJeV_E The Hochobir, according to an old legend, has to be climbed by every Lower Carinthian once a year in order to be spared from the seven Carinthian plagues; which are: poverty, illness, celibacy, bad weather, water shortages, mountain shortages and making cheese noodles on Fridays. As a Styrian, I cannot answer the extent to which this legend is true, but there must be some truth to it, because it is not for nothing that so many Carinthians climb the Hochobir! ☺ After spending some time in Carinthia again, it's practically de rigueur to climb the Hochobir and we did that yesterday together with numerous other hikers. From the Eisenkappler Hütte we climbed comfortably to the summit. The temperatures were pleasant and Mailo could still enjoy some patches of snow. Conclusion: always a nice tour!

After tomorrow the weather is supposed to be a bit unbearable, we made a spontaneous visit to the Hochobir today. It's always a nice tour. And the weather report was exactly right: it started to rain at the Eisenkappler hut back! Conclusion: a tour that we love to do again and again! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdmgGrTreVg
