Reindersmeer Lock

Highlight • Monument

This lock is no longer in use. Between 1971 and 2001, more than 22 thousand ships with sand and gravel sailed through this lock. The lock was counted out of use in 2001. A brasserie (Bosbrasserie In de sluis) and the visitor centre De Maasduinen are located on the inner head.

South of the Reindersmeer, in the municipal forests, you'll find a wonderful mix of paths for walkers, cyclists, MTB riders, and the more sporty hiker who isn't afraid of sandy hills. A beautiful alternation of nature with a small and usually quiet parking lot nearby on the Wezerweg, approximately halfway between Well and the German border. Those who start here, through the wooded landscape, could not suspect that they would suddenly encounter this impressive lake, so different are the landscapes in some places.

https://www.komoot.de/collection/949610/bucket-list-fuer-wanderer-alle-nationalparks-der-niederlande https://www.komoot.de/tour/203146632 "The hiking trail through National Park De Maasduinen starts at the visitor center, which is located in a complex of locks. The easiest way to get to the starting point of the route is by car. In about 16 kilometers you walk anti-clockwise around the beautiful Reindersmeer and along sandy heaths The Maasduinen is the longest river dune belt in the Netherlands. The park is located in North Limburg right next to the German border. You have a view of the Reindersmeer from the start. Sand has been excavated in the area since 1963. Sand extraction was stopped in 2001, after which the former sand pond was converted into a nature reserve. Swimming and fishing are prohibited, but the lake has beautiful natural beauty. You can also observe special amphibians and reptiles. North of the lake, the path turns east after about 3 kilometers. From here you have a beautiful view of bogs and coniferous forests. After the Wezerweg follow a route marked with green posts. The landscape slowly changes into a different environment with sandy soils and dunes. Here you also have a breathtaking view of the Maasduinen, which gives this national park its name. The route continues south with an additional loop through a wooded area. You can shorten the route by taking the ferry across the Reindersmeer back to the visitor center." +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ 🐻 A varied and scenic circular hike in De Maasduinen National Park!
