This triangular route heading east is one of my favourite local gravel loops, and a pretty big day out too. Taking in parts of the Cotswold Way, the stunning bridleways of Castle Combe, the Fosse Way bridleway descent into the city of Bath and then an easy finish following the river and the traffic-free Bristol to Bath Path back to the start, it’s a brilliant route not to be underestimated!

Expect chalky-white bridleways, wide gravel byways, quiet lanes and pretty towpaths. Spend as much or as little time as you like exploring historic Bath, where you’ll also find many places to enjoy a drink, meal or ice-cream!

After following the smooth and traffic-free Bristol to Bath Path out of the city, you’ll take back lanes through Pucklechurch (including a steep and rocky warm up climb), then on through Hinton up the alternative Cock Lane climb which is quieter than the main road through the trees in the village. Turn left onto the Cotswold Way further up, riding along the field margin with fantastic views on a clear day as far as the Severn Bridge and Wales beyond. You’ll follow this through a few fields, over the main road and along, parallel to the M4 motorway.

To the north of Nettleton, enjoy the bumpy hedgerow bridleway past the dairy farm, which after a few gates opens up into a central path up through a large arable field. Skirt the next few field edges before returning to the lanes, then onto Summer Lane gravel byway.

The real highlight of the route comes next as you pass the Castle Combe race course, well known for the mid-week crits, and take the bridleway through Hammerdown Wood. Expect chalky hillside trails, impressive valleys, secluded and vibrant with wildlife.

The following leg takes you onto the Roman Road of the Fosse Way, admittedly quite a busy road at times but with good visibility, and corking views to the Wessex Downs on your left. Peel off to the right when you reach Bannerdown, taking the Fosse Way bridleway descent that can be pretty technical down to Batheaston.
Cross the river to the gravel trail that’ll lead you to the canal, and ride into the centre of Bath along the towpath, taking care for other users as it can get pretty busy along here.

From Bath, you follow the Bristol to Bath Path all the way back into Bitton, before peeling off to ride up Willsbridge Hill. You make your way to Hanham Lock, taking the idyllic gravel trail alongside the River Avon through Conham River Park to finish.

Cotswold Way Field Margin Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Starting from the lane that links Hinton and Marshfield, this section of the Cotswold Way is a bridleway, and takes you along the field margin next to the hedge to start.

On a clear day, look out for the wind turbines and the Severn Bridge across to Wales in the distance.

At the end of the field, the way turns right for a short climb along the edge of the next field to cross the main road.

Nettleton Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant little stretch of bridleway, first through the trees along the edge of a field usually full of dairy cows, then up the centre of a large arable field climb, before skirting around the edge of the field.

A bit mucky in winter and bumpy in summer (especially after the wet winter we've had). This is a fun, narrow and a little challenging linking route.

Really enjoyable byway to cycle along. Wouldn't recommend going on a road bike unless there's been a dry spell of weather as there are some large puddles and bumps. However, very rideable for CX, gravel and MTB alike. Really nice section to get off the roads

Castle Combe Bridleways

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

These are quintessential Cotswold bridleways at their finest. A stretch combining valley-side grassy trails, a lane through a quaint Cotswold stone village and alongside a babbling stream, woodland doubletrack and pasture.

Located to the south of the well-known Castle Combe race circuit, this bridleway passes east to west from Kent's Bottom Farm through Hammerdown Wood and West Yatton Down, before crossing the village at Long Dean to climb parallel to By Brook, reaching the lane near Ford village.

Well worth a ride if you're in this area.

Three Shires Stones

Highlight • Historical Site

Erected in 1859, the Three Shires Stones mark the point where Somerset, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire meet.
Although the marking is pretty impressive, it's nestled at the side of the main road, part of the Fosse Way, so it's easy to miss.
It's said that the stones were once part of an ancient burial chamber.

Conham River Park Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Follow the river path through Conham River Park along the Avon from near Trooper's Hill all the way to the two pubs (the Chequers and Old Lock and Weir Inn) for the easiest ride.

There are a few parallel lines higher up through the woodland that are more technical; you'll need a gravel or mountain bike for those.

All the trails become very wet and muddy in the winter. Delve a little deeper and you'll find some incredible stone cliffs.

Look out for the (nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah) Bat Cave!
