This route was planned by komoot.
The Raeren Castle Loop is approximately 50 kilometers long and typically takes around 3 hours to complete on a touring bicycle, depending on your pace and stops.
The route features a varied terrain, primarily a mix of paved surfaces and unpaved forest tracks. A significant portion utilizes the Vennbahn, a former railway line known for its exceptionally smooth asphalt and gentle 2% maximum gradient. However, be prepared for some potentially more challenging unpaved sections.
Komoot classifies this route as a "moderate bike ride," requiring "good fitness." While the paved sections, especially along the Vennbahn, are accessible for most skill levels, the inclusion of unpaved or more challenging segments contributes to its moderate rating. Some riders might find themselves pushing their bike on tougher parts.
The Raeren Castle Loop is named after Raeren Castle, which serves as a natural starting or stopping point. Parking facilities are typically available near the castle. As it's a loop, you can begin your ride at any point along the route that offers convenient access and parking.
The route offers a magnificent journey through diverse landscapes and historical sites. You'll pass by the historic Raeren Castle, enjoy expansive views from the Wesertalsperre Viewpoint, and traverse unique natural areas like the Imgenbroicher Venn. The trail also extensively uses the Vennbahn, a historic railway line converted into a cycle path.
Yes, the route is intimately linked with the Vennbahn (Radweg), which makes up a significant portion of the loop. It also intersects with other official trails such as RAVeL Ligne 48, RAVeL W9 La Véloroute grandeur Nature, and sections of the GR 56 Sentiers de l'Est de la Belgique.
The Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park offers beautiful scenery year-round. However, for touring cyclists, late spring through early autumn (May to October) generally provides the most pleasant weather conditions, allowing you to fully enjoy the diverse landscapes of moors, forests, and valleys.
While specific regulations for dogs on this exact loop are not detailed, the route passes through the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park. Generally, dogs are permitted in nature parks but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other visitors. Always check local signage for specific rules.
There are no general entrance fees for cycling on the Raeren Castle Loop or within the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park. However, as it is a protected natural area, it's important to respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Specific permits are not typically required for recreational cycling.
You can expect a diverse and picturesque landscape. The route takes you through the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Nature Park, known for its "postcard landscapes." This includes vast forests, ancient moorlands with peat moss hills and heather, river valleys, meadows, and unique peatlands. You'll also experience parts of the Ardennes forest.
While the route offers a sense of immersion in nature, Raeren Castle itself is a cultural landmark and starting point, often having facilities nearby. Given the trail's connection to the Vennbahn, which is a popular long-distance cycle path, you may find cafes or small eateries in the villages it passes through. It's advisable to carry some snacks and water, especially for longer stretches.
Very scenic tour...first on the Vennbahn...then through the High Fens...worth it!
Today we drove from Konzen train station to the High Fens. To the Weser dam on the other side, back to Raeren and then back along the Vennbahn cycle path. Highly recommended in this great autumn weather

From the Weser Dam to Raeren Castle and on to the Dreilägebach Dam. We followed the Getzbach stream for a while in the Venn. It was also a beautiful tour. Best wishes 🙋♀️
After more than 3 years, we drove the second section of the Vennbahn today - entry at the old Raeren train station (with parking) and then to shortly after Monschau. From here via the Hohe Venn National Park and the Weser Reservoir back to the starting point. Very nice round through varied landscape. Moderate inclines, unless you make the detour to Monschau - which we didn't do 😉
