Kandel Tour (Josef-Seger-Weg) - Black Forest

Hiking

On this smooth tour you will circle one of the main attractions of the two valleys: the summit of the majestic Kandel.

You can walk around the Kandel summit on the Josef-Seger-Weg, named after a forestry official who knew the candle inside out. The path leads you across mountain meadows to the northern steep slope. Pay attention to where you put your foot, because it can be damp and slippery on the rocky trails. In contrast, the west side appears much brighter and friendlier. Walking past cool brooks you can watch the climbers with their hobby.

Take a seat on the wooden bench at the Thomas hut and enjoy the magnificent panorama over the valley and the surrounding hilly landscape. At the Fensterliwirt at the Gummenhütte you are almost a round around the candelabra. With a cool drink, you can therefore look at the beautiful area again before heading to the final sprint.

Even if the landlord is not there, you can take a summit beer here and pay for it in the cheese. The fridge is outside, filled with soda and beer. How it should be.

Beautiful varied round in ideal weather - dry and sunshine. Surefootedness is required!

Today, during a flying visit home, we went on a hike around the Kandel with my sister, it goes on beautiful forest paths, mainly in the shade around the Kandel summit with fantastic views of the Rhine Valley and the Vosges

Really nice circular route. We walked on a public holiday; of course there were other people out and about. And we went in the opposite direction to the usual one: next time we'll go anti-clockwise. Then you'll probably have a better view of the direction you're going.

Beautiful easy and short hike with many places to marvel at

The "Kandel Tour" starts at the top of the Kandel and runs along wild paths, past impressive rocks and great viewpoints. It goes over roots and stones and pleasantly soft forest floor. The tour is well signposted and perfect in the heat, as we were repeatedly in the shady forest. Highly recommended 👍

The start was at the car park at Kandel. From there, you first go up to the Kandel summit. From there, you have beautiful views of the Kaiserstuhl and the Vosges. You then continue to the Gummenhütte. We made a detour to the Thomas Hütte. An ideal place for a break. The trail leads past the Kandelfelsen via narrow paths. The trail leads back to the car park via the cross-country trail. Great tour with great views all the time. Lots of narrow paths. If the wind conditions are good, you can watch paragliders take off.

In bright sunshine – and initially cool temperatures (10 degrees Celsius) – I began my Kandel hike. It's a circular trail that offers many beautiful and far-reaching views of the surrounding landscapes. A highlight, in my opinion, is the Thomas Hut. Here, in addition to fantastic views, there's also the opportunity for a short break.

Beautiful hike on the Josef Seger path around the Kandel. It's mostly on narrow single trails, sometimes with roots, stones and now and then on forest roads. In some places, sure-footedness is an advantage. To the Thomashütte (only a rest area with a view, no hospitality) with a wonderful view of the Glottertal, the Roßkopf, Freiburg, the Kaiserstuhl and towards the Vosges 🇫🇷 it is 150m from the actual path. At the Gummerhütte, also known as the Fensterliwirt, there is something to eat and drink. The special thing about the hut, the window 🪟 where you get the food 🥘 is at ground level. The Josef Seger path does not lead you up to the Kandelspitze/Kandelpyramide, but a detour up about 200m is worthwhile. From up there you have a great all-round view.
