Gravel riding

Embark on the East Bristol bridleway loop from Temple Meads, a moderate gravel ride spanning 25.8 miles (41.5 km) with 848 feet (258 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 45 minutes. This route offers a diverse mix of paved surfaces, light gravel, farm tracks, and even some singletrack, blending urban off-road sections with picturesque countryside. You will cycle along the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, enjoying views of the River Avon, and pass through the 1.1-mile (1.8 km) lit Staple Hill Tunnel, a notable landmark on your journey.

While suitable for all skill levels, be prepared for varied terrain including potentially muddy sections, technical climbs, and rocky parts, especially if conditions are wet. The Cattybrook Bridleway Climb, for instance, can be quite challenging even in dry weather with its large rocks and slippery bits. The route is easily accessible from Temple Meads, but remember that some unpaved sections, including old Roman roads, can become very sloppy in winter, so plan your visit accordingly.

This loop is celebrated as the most popular gravel bike trail around Bristol on Komoot, praised for its accessibility and variety. It effectively blends urban and natural environments, allowing you to experience Bristol from a unique perspective. The Bristol and Bath Railway Path, a significant part of the route, holds historical importance as a former railway line and was the first major project by Sustrans, featuring former railway stations and quirky sculptures along the way.

Gravel Trail to Westerleigh

Highlight • Trail

Where the cycle path changes from tarmac to a light gravel, strade bianche style in places next to the fields and more muddy under the trees. Really fun and beautiful way to escape the city.

Dramway Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

It's marked as a footpath from the northern end and bridleway from the southern end, but rest assured this is officially a bridleway and hence rideable. Brilliant compact mud and pretty wide too.

Bitterwell Lake

Highlight • Structure

Bitterwell Lake is a man-made lake that once belonged to the Coalpit Heath Colliery Company. The lake was used to soak pit props for the mine until the closure of the mine.

In 1930, the lake was aquired by the Westerleigh Parish Council who transformed it into a place to fishing, swimming, and boating. You can find more information, here: bitterwelllake.co.uk

Broad Lane Restricted Byway (West Section)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The first section of Broad Lane to the west, which extends further east to road, and then on over the railway crossing into Westerleigh. Enjoy this wide doubletrack, stony and dirty and anything but level!

Broad Lane Byway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant off-road trail, compacted mud so can be sloppy in winter. Pretty flat between the trees.

Old Country Lane and Grassy Singletrack

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A nice piece to link into Batchfield lane. Surface can be a little muddy in places, but theres a little bit of everything road, grassy doubletrack and single track, but manageable on a CX or gravel bike. Barrier to stop cars and bikes getting through.

Batchfield Lane Dirt Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A favourite for fly tippers, and even more so for cyclists - zero cars here, and it turns into singletrack too, what's not to like!?

Cattybrook Bridleway Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A techy and challenging climb even in drier conditions, you'll need to pick your line carefully up this one to avoid the large rocks and slippery bits! I can imagine it gets pretty sloppy in winter too.

Easily accessible off the ring road bike path or from Cattybrook Road.

Pomphrey Hill Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A little-known bridleway alternative to a short leg of the ring road cycle path, this light gravel trail is largely wide and flat with a single narrow style (no gate) at the Pomphrey Hill end.

Rodway Common

Highlight • Trail

Besides the expanse of common land at the top of the hill, there are some brill dirt singletracks leading down to the Bristol to Bath Path, and harder than they look! Stick to the zig-zags if you're finding it too tough.

Staple Hill Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

Staple Hill tunnel is a disused railway tunnel that was originally part of the Midland Railway's Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line, which connected Bristol and Bath. The tunnel runs for approximately 1.1 miles (1.8 km) through the hillside, and was opened in 1869. It is now an iconic part of the Bristol-Bath railway cycling path.

The cycle path takes up less than half the width of the tunnel and the rest of the floor consists of uneven rocks. The tunnel is lit all year-round, but cyclists are advised to turn their lights on. The roof leaks in places, giving the appearance of rain.
