Gravel riding

Prepare for a difficult gravel biking adventure on the 42.4-mile (68.3 km) Monsal and High Peak trails loop, a route that typically takes around 5 hours and 39 minutes to complete. You will encounter a total elevation gain of 2186 feet (666 metres) as you traverse the picturesque Peak District. Ride through spectacular limestone dales, passing over the iconic Headstone Viaduct and through several atmospheric, lit railway tunnels on the Monsal Trail. The High Peak Trail offers expansive panoramic views across the countryside, showcasing stunning limestone landscapes and remnants of industrial heritage. The primary surface is crushed limestone, providing a generally firm ride, though some connecting sections can be rougher.

While much of the route is traffic-free and built on former railway lines, be aware that the High Peak Trail includes notable steep inclines, such as a 1 in 8 gradient at Middleton Top and a 1 in 9 section near Cromford High Peak Junction. These sections may require you to push your bike. Connecting routes can also introduce more challenging elements, including significant elevation gain and rougher surfaces. Mudguards are advisable, especially after heavy rain, as sections of the High Peak Trail can develop puddles. Cycle hire facilities are available at various points, including Parsley Hay and Hassop Station.

This loop stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty and industrial history, utilizing the trackbeds of historic railway lines. You will pass through old tunnels, over impressive viaducts, and alongside remnants of old stations, like the Middleton Top Engine House. The route is also a significant component of the larger 42-mile White Peak Loop Trail, which combines traffic-free paths with quiet lanes and bridleways. This offers a diverse gravel biking experience, from leisurely sections to more demanding excursions, making it an excellent introduction to gravel riding in the area.

Monsal Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Monsal Trail is a traffic-free route that runs for 8.5 miles (13.7 km) between Blackwell Mill and Bakewell. The compacted gravel trail winds through picturesque limestone dales and long tunnels. A particular highlight is the Headstone Tunnel leading to Headstone Viaduct, where breathtaking views await.

The trail follows a section of the former Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, which was built in 1863 to link Manchester with London. The line was closed in 1968 and remained unused for 12 years before being taken over by the Peak District National Park and transformed into a recreational route.

Headstone Viaduct

Highlight • Monument

Headstone Viaduct is a breathtaking structure that crosses Monsal Dale. The five-arch bridge, which is 70 feet (21 m) tall at its highest point, affords fine views over the River Wye. Built in 1863 by the Midland Railway, many believed the structure blighted the view upon its completion. These days, however, it is iconic and has Grade II-listed status. The viaduct now carries the Monsal Trail, a traffic-free route for hikers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users.

Highstone Lane Gravel Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Nice clean gravel track, occasional decent sized stones but rideable on a road bike if you really want (better with gravel tyres though). Watch out for large puddles after rain.

Great snack bar and bike hire centre. Makes for a good target to aim for when riding on the Tissington or High Peak Trails.

The snack bar doesn't have inside facilities so you'll have to use the picnic tables outside. These can be cold in winter as you're about 1,100 feet (335 m) up. There's some cover from the rain. and toilets facilities.

The bike hire centre offers various kinds of bikes including ones modified for disabled users and electric bikes.

High Peak Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The High Peak Trail runs from Cromford to Parsley Hay. It is built on the route of a railway which itself was built by a canal company. They used the canal method of long flat sections joined by steep sections (as with locks on the canal). This means that the High Peak Trail has a couple of hills that are much steeper (about 1:12) than you would expect on a railway. All traffic free.

Great for families so long as you are careful on the downhill sections. There are refreshments at each end and at Middleton Top, the National Stone Centre and others along the way. Can be used as part of a circular route including the Tissington Trail and a link route between the Tissington Trail and Carsington Reservoir.

Notorious for its steep gradient, Middleton Top is a super climb with majestic views at the top. Plus, there's bike hire and a small cafe here. It has also been part of the Eroica Britannia route for the past few years – imagine that gradient with barely functioning, pre-1979 gearing. At the top of the incline there's the Middleton Top Engine House, as the track used to be the High Peak steam railway.

Cromford Canal

Highlight (Segment) • River

A lovely canal from Matlock out to the start of the High Peak Trail. There is a cafe at the High Peak Junction on the canal. The trail starts behind the cafe.

Matlock Bath

Highlight • Gorge

Lovely colorful cafe in Matlock Bath on the edge of the Peak District. Perfect for all kinds of cyclists and walkers. There is plenty of space outside to leave bikes in sight from anywhere in the cafe. Inside there is plenty of seating and some fun quirky decor. The food and drink are great! All plant-based with some good gluten-free options. The serving sizes are decent for the reasonable prices. Would highly recommend the cake, sundaes and full English. The coffees come in a cafeteria which means there are two cups each for the price of one. The hot drinks are also served with a biscuit from the biscuit barrel, featuring bourbons, party rings and Oreos.
Overall a great stop!

All Mountain Guided Rides
November 9, 2024, High Peak and Monsal Trail Gravel Loop

What a way to spend a Saturday. It started with a Bikeability Fix session in Harpur Hill and finished with this epic ride. 🤟🏻✌🏻 What a route. Absolutely loved it. Without doubt the most enjoyable gravel ride I’ve had in a long time. Even if I had to hike-a-bike up the last two climbs as just couldn’t get any traction. Will definitely be doing it again……and stopping in Matlock for Fish & Chips! 👌🏻

A lovely day out riding in the Peaks with a small selection of Glorious Gravel Club riders. Love that descent down to Cromford. Happy I added that to the route instead of cutting it out. Well worth it for the smiles and the biggest Bakewell Tart in the world on the cafe stop! 👌🏻 Top day on the bike.

Great gravel ride along High Peak Trail and Monsal Trail. One section of hike a bike to get out of the gorge at the end if the Monsal Trail.

Only set out for a short ride and wasn't tracking untill past middleton top, full route is in planned rides
