Hiking

Are you a real “eavesdropper”? Then you will like this tour: The Felsenmeersteig - the king's tour under the eaves - lets you experience the Swabian Alb with all its wonderful facets. And all of this spread over an impressive 17 kilometers.

It starts at the gates of Burgfelden, from where you make your way to the first lookout point, the Böllat, in a (still) relatively comfortable way. The 920 meter high summit gives you an incredible view of the surrounding landscape - in good weather even as far as the dark ridge of the Black Forest - and encourages you to continue hiking and discover even more. It's good that many more highlights are waiting on the way.

You walk downhill for a while and come across the ancient sequoia trees, which are not a bad photo opportunity. Then the path climbs up again and you land - less than five kilometers after the start of your tour - on the restored keep of the former Schalksburg. Even from the plateau alone, you will be amazed at the view that is offered to you. Climbing the tower definitely pays off as well. This is followed by a longer alternation between smaller ascents and descents. You run through the so-called sea of rocks, namesake of this hike and an incomparable natural spectacle made of huge rock formations in the middle of the forest.

You have to hike uphill one last time - and do it properly. Once at the top, however, a wonderful landscape awaits you with the juniper heaths typical of the region. Enjoy the tranquility up here on the Heersberg before you return to Burgfelden, accompanied by a wonderful panorama.

Giant Sequoias of Balingen-Stockenhausen

Highlight • Natural Monument

King Wilhelm of Württemberg once ordered a pound of seeds from America. However, he did not know that the seeds of the sequoias are smaller than those of native trees. This is how he came up with around 100,000 seeds, which were raised in the Wilhelma and later distributed across the country. So here are a few.

Schalksburg Tower Ruins

Highlight • Castle

The Schalksburg, formerly also called Schaltzburg or Schalksberg, is a former hilltop castle, the ruins of which are located about six kilometers southeast of Balingen between the Albstadt districts of Burgfelden and Laufen an der Eyach. The Schalksburg is one of the largest castle complexes in terms of area on the Swabian Jura.

Felsenmeer (Swabian Jura)

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Felsenmeer is a living testament to the interplay of water, cold, heat, and the Jura limestone. In the middle of the forest, the enormous rock formations rise up for meters, creating a landscape that is as wild as it is bizarre in the dense forest.

Always great to bite the mountain three times. On the third ascent, the path knows only one direction anyway: up.
Unfortunately, after the tour, I happened to come across the Taufgänge website that the route is closed until March/April due to logging, among other things. Well. Guggsch num, guggsch rum...

My first real hike in 2025, and it was such a blast 🤣 3 steep climbs with gradients well over 20%, and of course the longest and toughest one right before the end. After that, I was exhausted 😅

At a good 17 kilometers and approximately 600 meters in elevation, the Felsenmeersteig is the most challenging of the Traufgänge (ridge walks). The first highlight, with a fantastic view from the "Böllat," isn't far behind. The gigantic landscape continues with the giant sequoias. Due to the weather forecast of very high temperatures, I decided on an "early hike." After all, it's not possible without exercise 😉
We set off at 5 a.m. from the Burgfelden hiking car park.
