Lusia Lakes Tour

05:50

18.6km

950m

Hiking

This tour winds above 2,000 meters above sea level, crossing places that were theaters of the First World War where the remains of Italian barracks are still visible.

The starting point is the valley station of the Castelir lifts in Predazzo which you can reach by car or public transport. To get you up to altitude, you can take advantage of the two sections of the cable car.

You start walking following the path that leads you to the Passo Lusia refuge.
After the refuge, the route becomes narrower and gives you a splendid view of the Catinaccio group. Your eyes will also be surprised by the panoramic point "La Trincea" where, as the name suggests, the fortifications of the Great War are still present. From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the basin of an ancient volcanic crater where the Lusia lakes are located, the lower basin of which you reach shortly after.

Take path 621 to continue downhill on the narrow path that takes you to the Bocche hut. Here you can admire a splendid view of the Pale di San Martino and taste the typical dishes.

Continue on the wide forest road 623 to return to the mountain station of the cable car which takes you comfortably back to the valley.

The Lusia Refuge is a structure rich in history and culture that has been welcoming hikers for over 100 years. Today it is a comfortable and welcoming Alpe Lusia restaurant in a privileged position: on one side the lower Val di Fassa, the Latemar, the Catinaccio and Monzoni groups, on the other the Lagorai chain, the Pale di San Martino and the area of the Paneveggio Natural Park. Open all year round, the refuge is located on the edge of the Le Cune - Ciamp slope, in the center of the Alpe Lusia - Bellamonte Ski Area. It offers 18 beds distributed in seven rooms, each with its own private services.

At an altitude of 2,332 meters and dominated by the imposing Gronton ridge, is the smallest of the Lusia lakes. Not far from its banks stands the characteristic Sandro Redolf stone bivouac, which is always open. All three lakes of Lusia are considered alpine biotypes, due to the fact that they host animal and plant species of great naturalistic interest.

After yesterday's picture-perfect weather, we were extremely lucky today. It started to rain lightly during the last few kilometers. When we arrived back at the campsite and everything was back to normal, it started to rain, with hail and thunderstorms. Rainfall reached over 30 liters per square meter, and the temperature plummeted from 30 to 14 degrees.
