Cycling

The Ybbstal Cycle Path takes you from the confluence of the Ybbs River and the Danube, steadily upstream through Amstetten and Waidhofen an der Ybbs to the beautiful Lunz Lake. The official route is about 110 kilometers long, with detours to idyllic swimming and rest areas adding a few more kilometers. If you want to fully experience the beautiful nature and clear waters, it's best to plan an overnight stay, for example, in Waidhofen an der Ybbs.

You start in the town of Ybbs and initially cycle through a gently rolling landscape with fields and orchards. You quickly reach the Blindenmarkter Ausee Lake and then cycle steadily uphill, sometimes directly along the Ybbs River and then off again. For a refreshing dip, the Allhartsberg Natural Pool and the Kematen Natural Pool, with a water playground, are also along your route.

About halfway through, the magnificent Rothschild Castle welcomes you in Waidhofen an der Ybbs. Continuing southeast, you can soon take a detour along the Little Ybbs River to the blacksmith village of Ybbsitz (Little Ybbstal Cycle Path). If you continue along the Ybbstal Cycle Path, you'll find yourself on a particularly beautiful stretch: you'll cycle through natural riverside landscapes, small tunnels, and the Ofenloch Gorge, which is also ideal for swimming.

Along the former Ybbstal Railway line, you'll reach Hollenstein an der Ybbs. The next dip in the water awaits you at the riverside lido there or in nearby Göstling an der Ybbs—either on the beach along the Ybbs River or in the saltwater pool. The final stretch then takes you to the destination of Lunz am See. The crowning finale is the picturesque Lunz Lake, where you can cool off for a refreshing dip. For the return trip to Waidhofen an der Ybbs, you can take the Radtramper bus or the Ybbstal bike taxi, which are available on call. Or you can spend another night in Lunz am See, for example, at the Refugium Lunz. If you want to continue cycling directly from here, you can continue your journey on the Erlauftal cycle path: www.komoot.com/de-de/tour/1639007586.

Rothschild Castle (Schloss Rothschild), Waidhofen an der Ybbs

Highlight • Castle

The Rothschildschloss contributes significantly to the cityscape with the surrounding buildings of the historic city center of Waidhofen an der Ybbs and is the postcard motif par excellence! Above all, the view from the surrounding bridges over the Ybbs will certainly make one or two photographers' hearts beat faster.

Absolutely recommendable swimming area to enjoy the crystal clear water of the Ybbs. There's a separate children's area for splashing around outside of the river current, and a simple restaurant.

In Göstling there is a natural bathing beach with a lawn and many wooden loungers. There is also an alpine club house here, whose function we could not identify. An island in the river sure gets crowded in the summer! We enjoyed our picnic on one of these loungers.

August 27, 2023, Vom Lunzer See nach Amstetten

Today we took the Radtramper (bus with bicycle transport) from Amstetten to Lunz am See. On the bus we happened to meet Stefanowitsch, he shares great and interesting tours on Komoot. It was a very short bus ride. From Göstling we had a very strong headwind and from Hollenstein the sun was gone and it was heavily overcast.

September 10, 2021, Ybbstalradweg

This week the weather was once again very good for us, today I rode the Ybbstalradweg from Lunz am See via Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Amstetten to Ybbs an der Donau with my ex-colleague and bike buddy Andi. From Lunz am See to Waidhofen an der Ybbs it was a dream of the scenic impressions and the bike path itself, which partly runs on the route of an abandoned narrow-gauge railway. From Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Amstetten, the cycle path unfortunately runs very often and for a long time next to the main road, there is also one place after another here. From Amstetten to Ybbs you drive quite a long time on country roads. My suggestion to those who also want to ride this cycle path, drive the section from Waidhofen an der Ybbs to Lunz am See, possibly also the same route back, along the way there are always nice places to rest and stop 😉

Before autumn comes, I "had" to go on an (extended) 2 day tour again 😀🚴‍♂️😀🚴‍♂️ For the start it went by car to Lunz am See. From there, the Ybbstal cycle path was on the program for the next 113 kilometers - up to the Danube to the Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant 🚴‍♂️😀🚴‍♂️😀 The tour is really beautiful and offers a lot of variety 👍🚴‍♂️😀👍🚴‍♂️😀 And tomorrow we will continue with the next bike path - back to Lunz am See - where hopefully my car will still be parked ... 😀🚴‍♂️😀🚴‍♂️

The Ybbstalradweg will get new sections in 2023. The published information is the route of 2022, so the Komoot map with photos is only partially correct. The total kilometers and meters in altitude will also change minimally. As soon as the new sections of the route are opened, the data on this website will be updated. The Ybbstalradweg is closed during the winter months (November 1st to April 15th). You can find more information, photos and a video of this bike tour on my website https://www.augustaust.com/rad-und-mtb-touren

Today we leave the Lower Austrian Alpine region in the direction of the Danube, a long pleasure tour with few meters of altitude along the Ybbs into the lowlands. 💯

Get back to me after exactly 3 weeks of abstinence from cycling, high time 🤣☝ !! Before I could even start again, I had to have my bike repaired on Friday. Since arriving in Flensburg 3 weeks ago, the rear tire - which gave me a "very mysterious" flat tire in Hamburg shortly before the end of my D-Tour 🇩🇪 - within a few days (while standing!) Lost all the air. Thank you my dear Ebike 🙏, you kept the chronological order this time, to point out to me beforehand about "shortness of breath" 😇🤣🤣 !!! Now the hose was exchanged a second time within a few weeks - probably the pothole "Ochsenweg" in northern Germany was my cause ... 🙈 So, yesterday I started the Ybbstalradweg from Ybbs a. d. Danube, it ends below in Lunz am See (approx. 110 km). The most interesting landscape is from Waidhofen a. d. Ybbs. Wildly romantic, it is beautiful to follow the crystal clear river in close proximity in the sometimes wider and then a little narrower Ybbstal, always with high mountains in view to the side. It was constantly uphill, so to think less about pedal breaks, it was exhausting enough anyway. Either the must tasting at the Seppelbauer made my legs difficult or I paused too long - but I was exhausted enough and tired in the evening 😅. The last few km to the final destination Lackenhof am Ötscher, Komoot gave me such a bad gravel road in the most lonely forest area, steeply uphill, that I was almost worried about ever arriving back in civilization 🤣. Already saw me as a forest spirit in the night 👻 .. Today it's the Erlauftalradweg back to Ybbs, I hope the weather god is "reasonably" well with me today 🤔. I'm already used to a lot..😇

Ybbstal bike path! Anyone who knows him likes him. If you don't know it yet, try it out! Even on former railway lines, you accumulate a few meters of altitude upstream. A narrow valley is a wind tunnel, downwind of course downwind! And the sun does the rest to get you sweating. If you don't just want to eat at the Chinese or Italian restaurant in Waidhofen - there's nothing else on the main square - you'll find the Punti inn close to the cycle route on the outskirts. Good, down-to-earth cuisine and innkeepers who can still greet local guests by their first names, so people here still know each other. The Schwarzelmüller pastry shop in Hollenstein is a must-stop! If you miss this, you're missing out on a treat! So go ahead and drive!

With pleasant autumnal weather, we enjoyed the Ybbstalradweg, which leads through beautiful countryside, with stops in the interesting town of Waidhofen and in Hollenstein with its little church on the mountain.
