Hiking
This 16-kilometer mountain hike takes you across magnificent alpine meadows to one of the most beautiful viewpoints over Lake Brienz and to the largest ibex colony in the Bernese Oberland. You can also look forward to an exciting stretch of path over a narrow ridge. The circular hike starts at the Post in Habkern.
Right from the start, the path climbs crisply. You continue to hike up and after five kilometers you will pass the Jägerstübli and the Lombachalp. Time for a break on the sun terrace. With fresh energy you tackle the next part of the climb.
The path zigzags up to the ridge height and then runs as a clearly visible path to the Augstmatthorn lookout point. The view from up here is one of the most spectacular in the region. The lake lies deep below you, behind it are the giants of the Bernese Alps. Just beautiful!
You hike further over the ridge and enjoy great views down to Bödeli, the alluvial plain between Lake Brienzer and Lake Thun. Then it's very steep down to the hut in Horet Läger. The last part of the tour you hike back to Habkern over magnificent meadows.
You can get to Habkern from Interlaken in a relaxed manner by Postbus. If you want to shorten the hike a bit, you can also book the "Bus Alpin" call bus from Habkern to Lombachalp or vice versa. You can find all the information here: https://busalpin.ch/regionen/habkern-lombachalp/sommer.

A classic in the Bernese Oberland. I find these two peaks very often on the tours of my contacts. Including @Alessandro @Andybewegt @Emanuel🇨🇭 @Joachim @Kalbermatter @Mathias @👣 OnTheRoadAgain 🇨🇭 @Takida and others. But if you make contact, the tour will be repeated every year. @Renate has four recordings on Komoot and I don't want to know how many visits there have been without recording or publishing. Almost like the tours to the Kaiseregg in Schwarzsee for me 😅. Unlike most others on the summit, I started from Habkern (Habchere). Why do I know this? Using the hiking trails. The hiking trail from Habkern leads up through the forest for a long time with lots of steps. Only at 1540m do you emerge from the forest into a meadow. There was only a very narrow path towards the hiking trail on the Brienzergrat, often with more grass than earth in the path. Completely different than the hiking trail from Lombachalp (mountain restaurant) to Augstmatthorn, which I chose as my descent. There are often 2, 3 or even more wide parallel paths completely in dirt (no more grass in the path) and with cut stones and rocks in the way. Most people park at the Lombachalp car park and choose this route as their ascent and descent. By the way, I found the most beautiful part of the hike to be the part on the ridge up to the Suggiture summit. Meadows, trees, roots, rocks, constant gentle ups and downs and a wonderful panorama. Finally, a short, steeper section to the summit. At the Suggiture summit there are passages secured with steel cables on both sides. Much variety. After the Suggiture summit to the Augstmatthorn summit, you are on an easy high-altitude hike with less variety and only minimal elevation change. People on the Suggiture = 2 👍🏻 / People on the Augstmatthorn >15 plus a few groups having a picnic in the meadows very close to the summit 🤷 By the way. Not so far away there is a second Augstmatthorn in the Bernese Oberland. But there the mountain is written in dialect. On my hike to the Lobhörnern above Lauterbrunnen there was an Ougstmatthoren at 2462m on the ridge opposite 😊
Today our tour starts at Habkern (Post bus stop). From there it goes over Maiezyt and then very steeply up the mountain. Here you always have the opportunity to look out over Lake Brienz. This changes suddenly as soon as the path becomes a ridge path. Here the view of the lake and the mountains in the background magically attracts you. A particular highlight is the Suggiturm. The very steep climb is made up for by a magnificent view. Continue along the ridge path to the Augsmatthorn. From here the descent via the Jägerstöbli on the Lombachalp. Strengthened, we return to Habkern.
Incredibly beautiful autumn hike, the Lombachalp - Suggiture part is well attended on nice days. Could be shortened by almost 4km by taking the Alpin bus from Habkern, Zäundli at 8:30 a.m. to Lombachalp (runs 1x in the morning, as of October 2022). Relatively steep ascent to the Augstmatthorn - Suggiture. The lucky ones spot ibexes along the way. Then 5* tightrope walk with a few spots that are challenging for those with a fear of heights. But again and again view of the usual suspects (Brienzersee, Eiger-Mönch-Jungfrau) Up to the Harder Kulm slowly back into the forest, but also very nice there. At the Harder Kulm then the large crowd of tourists, that's when the peace and quiet finally came to an end. The Harder Bahn takes us back to the valley.
