The same equation applies almost everywhere in the Ruhr area: north equals industry, south equals lovely nature. The east-west railway tracks often divided the urban areas into rich and poor, thus determining the cityscape and urban development in many places. Therefore, this tour today takes you not only in one…

There was nothing with video this time - little Rollei went on strike https://youtu.be/7YlKllJ-ZF8
First cycled to Vohwinkel to the S Bahn. No problems with the elevator, you should either just stand in front or in the back with the bikes, there are only the bike racks. Take the S-Bahn to Essen Kupferdreh, from there the tour around Lake Baldeney starts. I don't find the right side of the lake from Kupferdreh that attractive because the route for bicycles does not lead directly past the lake, only the footpath goes directly around the lake. There is also the possibility to travel across the lake with the white fleet and by bike. About 500m from the lake is the Villa Hügel (admission 5 euros per person) worth a visit. It is very impressive what the Krupp family has built there. The way back on the other side of the lake is definitely the nicer one for me, you just drive along the lake to Kupferdreh on extra wide paths.
A very nice loop around the lake with many opportunities for a break.
The Baldeneysee is the recreational address for the city of Essen and the surrounding area. You are in a jiffy in a beautiful landscape. From water sports to hiking and cycling, there is something for everyone here.
Very nice circular route around the lake which is unfortunately very overcrowded and many inconsiderate cyclists towards the pedestrians have cycled myself and will no longer do this tour on the weekends
Today was our first ride in the Ruhr Valley, to explore the area a bit. From Kupferdreh, we cycled around Lake Baldeney to Werden. There was a lot going on in Werden today. All the shops were open, stalls were everywhere, and there was live music. The first impression of the cycling infrastructure is fantastic; everything is excellently signposted, and there's a hub system like in the Netherlands with a dedicated route program.
Great tour around the Baldeneysee. But it's actually always very nice there. The south side is a bit nicer for cycling because you ride closer to the water. Even at an early hour it was already pretty busy. 2 playgrounds for the little one were also built in. And of course there was an ice cream at the favorite stall 🤤 Komoot hadn't started the recording again, so a small section is missing.
A circular route around Essen's most popular recreational area Lake Baldeney, created between 1931 and 1933 amidst wooded hills, is the largest of the six Ruhr reservoirs. It's popular with cyclists, inline skaters, walkers, and water sports enthusiasts. The 16.8 km (10.5 mi) circular route (90 m elevation gain) leads into the Ruhr Valley and around Lake Baldeney. The officially recommended starting point is the old railway bridge on the Hardenbergufer in Essen-Kupferdreh. Another excellent starting point—especially for those arriving by public transport—is the Essen-Werden S-Bahn station. Starting the circular route in Essen-Werden, you'll first pass the weir and shortly thereafter reach the regatta course with its regatta tower. A short stop here is worthwhile to enjoy the view. The route continues a little way from the lake to the headframe of the Carl Funke coal mine. There are beautiful views along the way. ``` Arriving at the old railway bridge, we cross Lake Baldeney. We make a brief stop on the bridge to admire its architecture and enjoy the view across the lake. The second half of the loop takes us back to Essen-Werden along the Hardenberg shore of Lake Baldeney. Since we can cycle almost entirely along the lake, this section offers many beautiful views. On the opposite shore, we can see the Carl Funke coal mine and the regatta tower again. Villa Hügel, perched high above the lake, is also clearly visible from this side of the shore. --- Note: Instead of the official starting point at the "Old Railway Bridge, Essen - Kupferdreh," we started at the Heissiwald parking lot in Essen-Werden. This approximately 1.7 km access route—which also involves an ascent at the end (+70 m elevation gain)—is not part of the southern route. Those who still choose to descend from the top will ride through a beautiful wooded section, passing a game reserve with its wild boar, fallow deer, and mouflon.
