This beautiful circular hike takes you past five "peaks"—well, at least by Münsterland standards. The Tannenbültenberg is a respectable 104.7 meters high, the Lünsberg measures 92.5 meters, the Fliegerberg reaches 84.7 meters, the Hövelsberg rises 83 meters, and the Dönersberg 90 meters. In this otherwise flat region, these are small…

Today I explored "The Mountains" for you. Well, not THE mountains, but the new "The Mountains" trail between Borken and Velen. On the nearly 14-kilometer circular hike, five peaks are waiting to be climbed⛰️🌳✨ Yeah, okay, maybe they're more like hills. But for the otherwise flat landscape of Münsterland, five consecutive peaks are certainly worth mentioning. And so the climbs are quite easy to master 😉 Tannenbültenberg (104m) Lünsberg (92m) Dönersberg (90m) Fliegerberg (84m) Hövelsberg (83m) Untouched nature, fragrant pine forests, expansive landscapes, and even a hint of beach feeling create a very special atmosphere. And to top it all off, there are adorable Scottish Highland cattle. Perfect for anyone looking for a peaceful hike through the forest and wanting to treat themselves to a little break.
You can find this wanderer between Borken and Velen. And why "The Mountains"? Well, because the beautiful spot there is actually called that and also includes five mountains in this region (Tannenbültenberg (104.7 m), the Lünsberg (92.5 m), the Fliegerberg (84.7 m), the Hövelsberg (83 m) and the Dönersberg (90 m)). The view from the Fliegerberg is very beautiful, as you look down on the grazing Scottish Highland cattle that are doing the landscape maintenance here. The Fliegerberg is called that because it used to be part of a gliding operation. Otherwise there is a lot of beautiful forest, beautiful sandy paths, few forest motorways and a minimal passage along the road. Altitude training doesn't really work here though 😆. Even if the name suggests otherwise. I didn't want to either... I liked it...
Pure nature, the feeling of dunes and open landscapes, expansive forests, heath and tree pipits... and even Scottish Highland cattle – where can you find all that? Welcome to "The Mountains" between Borken and Velen! This is a beautiful tour. I particularly liked the "Fliegerberg" (Flying Mountain), which takes its name from its former use as a gliding airfield. A lovely place to relax. ☺️
Today another hiker from the Hohe Mark team. https://www.hohe-mark-steig.de/landstreifer/landstreifer-die-berge/ Pure nature, dune feeling and open landscapes, extensive forests, heath and tree pipits... and even Scottish highland cattle - where can you find all of that? Welcome to "The Mountains" between Borken and Velen! Five "peaks" are waiting for you here - well, at least by Münsterland standards: the Tannenbültenberg (104.7 m), the Lünsberg (92.5 m), the Fliegerberg (84.7 m), the Hövelsberg (83 m) and the Dönersberg (90 m). Small highlights in the otherwise flat region! And don't worry - with a maximum gradient of two percent, the path is super relaxed and really comfortable. "The mountains", as they are simply called here, have exciting stories to tell in addition to the breathtaking nature. The "Fliegerberg" takes its name from its former use as a gliding site. Today, the hill is a valuable habitat for rare animals and plants and was declared a nature reserve in 2011. An almost magical landscape is hidden between the hills - and on top of that, there are also historical treasures to discover: very old burial mounds from the Stone and Bronze Ages lie here, mostly inconspicuously hidden in the terrain. An information board at the Hubertusplatz hiking car park tells you more about this special piece of history. And of course you will find information boards about flora and fauna everywhere - there are lots of things flying, running and crawling here... If you want to put your feet up in between, you can do so wonderfully on one of the many benches at Hubertusplatz. By the way, you are in the area of the town of Velen, a recognized climatic health resort. Take the opportunity to take a deep breath and recharge your batteries. Or pack a cushion and just find your favorite spot along the way - there are enough beautiful corners to linger and enjoy.
This fairly new "Landstreifer" trail is something special. Wonderful to walk, varied paths and trails. Gentle hills (some with history). Mostly forest floor and sometimes sand under your feet. It is worth reading the information boards along the way. You can learn a lot about flora and fauna. We give this "Landstreifer" a straight A! 🥾🥾⚒️🌞🌞
Since this Landstreifer was actually too short for me and the journey would not have been worth it, I had set two additional waypoints in my planning at Gemen Castle and north of Heiden to extend the route to 31 km. I decided not to do the loop towards Heiden from the start because my two weather apps had predicted rain for 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively. A third app would have been an advantage because it would have correctly predicted the rain for 9:30 a.m. So I skipped the castle and limited myself to the Landstreifer. A great route in a great forest area. Lots of small paths and a lot of sand. I will definitely start here again.
This new trail has been officially open since 10:00 a.m. today. There was an organized hike from the Hohe Mark Nature Park, which we were already on our way to. This lovely information vehicle from the Hohe Mark Nature Park was parked at our parking lot today. The trail is well signposted and offers several opportunities to stop for a break. Pure nature and a dune feeling 😍 on a 14 km circular trail with 5 peaks 😂 at least from the Münsterland perspective (Tannenbültenberg 104.7 m, Lünsberg 92.5 m, Fliegerberg 84.7 m, Hövelsberg 83 m, and Dönersberg 90 m). We also made a detour to a beautiful gravel pit lake for the dogs, a refreshing dip in today's temperatures.
