The Combe Laval is absolutely worth seeing. From Saint-Jean-en-Royans it is just under 650 meters in altitude to this spectacular road. It's worth it!
Cycling isn't always a bed of roses! Right from the start, I'm taking on steep 15-16% gradients, which hurt (a lot) 🥹. My legs aren't responding, so I'll cut the ride short as time goes on. The roads are pleasant and smooth, even the less-frequented ones in the forest that lead to a pass. After the Col de Bioux, the road continues to climb in a looooong, more or less straight, false flat. There's no chance to refuel on this route, so plan ahead; however, there are regular fountains to refill your water bottles. The Combe Laval cirque is magnificent, and I respect the old people who carved this road out of the mountains. The return through the furnace in the early afternoon is as predicted: not very pleasant.
