We continue towards Meran to our destination in Bozen. Shortly after the hydroelectric power station in Töll we stop at the rest area in Algund with a wonderful view of Meran and the Adige Valley. After a stroll through the city of Merano, we cycle further south along the Adige. We meet the Eisack and reach the center of Bozen on well-developed cycle paths. Tour leader : Peter Lill Hendriks & Adela Davidescu
Today was all about relaxation, a short stage on a well-developed cycle path with a continuous gradient. Added to that was the spectacular view of the mountains of the Vinschgau. Merano was only touched on by the cycle path, it led through the few dingy corners of this beautiful city. South of Merano in the direction of Bolzano, the valley becomes much wider, the mountains are further away and the view is beautiful, but no longer as spectacular as in the Vinschgau. The path led between the railway line and the Etsch, unfortunately without shade, which somewhat spoiled the enjoyment of the ride on this hot and sunny day despite the downhill ride. I reached Bolzano feeling a little underwhelmed and hope that the energy I saved today will help me on the journey up the Eisacktal tomorrow.
From Naturns to Bozen The route to Merano also led through the orchards today. The fruit farmers are hard at work. We deviated a little from the Etschtal valley until we reached the beautiful Algund. Then we went briskly down to the spa town of Merano, which lies at the confluence of the Passeier and the Etsch. Here we had a little stroll around town and ate ice cream and in the afternoon we continued on the Etschtal cycle path via Nals and Terlan to Bozen. This section of the route is a bit boring. Just through the valley, but with a headwind and full sun, but always with beautiful views of the steep slopes to the right and left. Shortly before Bozen there is a great view of the Dolomites, still covered in snow. Past the Sigmundskron Castle to the confluence of the Etsch and Eisack, you are soon in Bozen, which already seems quite Italian here.
Beautiful tour along the Etsch. Merano was also very beautiful, although crowded as usual. The weather was good too!! 👍😀
Along the Etsch to Bolzano. Late summer temperatures from midday. Overnight stay in the Kolpinghaus (the cheapest accommodation for miles around, €97, including breakfast). End of the tour. Bike transport by bus only until October 5th. 😀 The long-distance trains are fully booked for bikes. So we return by local transport and change trains 4 times.
Nice tour, but we took the train home from Merano because of a heavy thunderstorm that unfortunately caught us from the Töll train station to the hotel in Partschins.
From Castelbello to Eppan on the Wine Route wonderful bike tour through the Meraner Land the orchards of South Tyrol perfect bike paths mostly always slightly downhill past Bozen in Eppan on the South Tyrolean Wine Route is our next accommodation where we stay 2 nights.
