Hiking

Mesa Verde is like no other national park in the USA. Most parks serve to protect the unique nature of their respective areas. Mesa Verde also boasts impressive, ancient cliff dwellings of the indigenous people. There are around 4,000 archaeological sites here. The hike to Point Lookout does not take you to any of them, but it is located right at the entrance to the national park and promises wide views within a short distance.

The trailhead is on the edge of the Morefield Campground, where you can park your car. From here, you go up almost 150 meters via numerous switchbacks. Although there are comparatively many trees and bushes growing here in the high desert, you still have almost always a clear view of the landscape along the way. A few short breaks are worthwhile.

Once you have climbed to the highest point with Point Lookout, you can enjoy the wonderful panorama. In good weather, the view extends as far as the towering San Juan and La Plata Mountains. Once you've had your fill, you can return the same way.

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The Point Lookout Trail is one of your first hiking options once you pull into Mesa Verde National Park. The trail heads up a pretty steep hillside, but it's not a super long trek to the top. You get unobstructed views pretty much the whole time since the vegetation is so sparse here in the high desert.
