Hiking

A multiple walk awaits you with this circuit of Pointe Sainte-Mathieu, located at the tip of Finistère. You discover the Iroise Sea through magnificent panoramas, each more unique than the last.

The route begins in Plougonvelin. This village reveals an authentic character with its small Breton town. The first part of the route goes inland to reach Saint-Mathieu. Along the way, you discover a former German command post. Today it is the Mémoires 39-45 Museum.

Once in Saint-Mathieu, the point site marks the high point of this walk. Its lighthouse built in the 14th century sits above the cliffs and offers a spectacular view of the sea.

The route takes the coastal path and passes near the blockhouse at the cap. Easily recognizable thanks to its structure topped with a concrete “cap”. This inclined roof had the function of deflecting enemy fire and protecting the main structure from air attacks.

At the sixth kilometer, we suggest you exit the GR34 to reach the Vaéré garden. The voluntary work of an individual, this small garden open to the public is worth the detour.

The end of the route leaves the path to cross the small hamlet of Poulherbet then return to the center of Plougonvelin.

Jardin du Vaéré

Highlight • Structure

The Vaéré garden is a must for the hike between Fort de Bertheaume and Point Saint-Mathieu, it is very well signposted and definitely worth the detour. As it is written this garden is private but accessible to all, it represents certain Breton sites and will not leave the walker indifferent. I recommend visiting it in spring when all the flowers "explode" and if you feel like it you can leave a room for its owner, he will put it to good use. Kenavo
