Cycling

This tour takes you from Neumarkt im Etschtal through picturesque wine and fruit growing areas and the Trudner Horn Nature Park to a panoramic hill on the San Lugano pass. You are traveling on the disused Fiemme Valley Railway line.

On the route you will discover a spectacular landscape with great panoramic views of the South Tyrolean lowlands. You cycle through the best locations for Pinot Noir and the native Lagrein variety. On the way you will also pass the ruins of Castelfeder Castle, which you can take a detour to. And you can expect a fascinating viaduct and several old tunnels that are still left over from the railway line.

Finally you reach the destination of the tour in the town of San Lugano, at the pass of the same name. Here you can have a leisurely stop at the end and replenish your energy reserves. If you want to cycle back again, just take the same path, which is almost all downhill.

Tip: It's worth taking a detour to the Castelfeder hill with its castle ruins. Since it's quite steep up the mountain and on rough terrain, we recommend that you park your bike below and climb the mystical hill on foot.

Recommended bike types for this tour: Gravel bike, MTB or a well-geared trekking or touring bike with a tire width of at least 32 mm.

Egna Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

Beautiful old market square with arcades. There are rustic places to stop for refreshments here, and the farmers' market also takes place every Friday.

Fleimstalbahn Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

If you like cycling on railway cycle paths, you should remember this highlight. I only rode a section. The Val di Fiemme railway, a narrow-gauge railway, existed from 1917 to 1963. It connected Predazzo in Val di Fiemme with Auer in the South Tyrolean lowlands. The viaduct is great. You cycle around the viaduct on an asphalt cycle path and then cycle under it with an incredible gradient. Good brakes are a prerequisite for completing the downhill ride safely.

Montan Wine Wheel

Highlight • Monument

A great game! Each box has three clues relating to a wine: colour, aroma and flavour. Have fun trying to guess which Bassa Atesina wine is hidden behind the box you have chosen!

After an initial stretch in the woods, after about half the journey we immerse ourselves first in the vineyards, and immediately afterwards in the 🍏 apple orchards.

The town belongs to two communities, namely Truden and Montan. The border between the two communities runs roughly along the main road through the town.

Unfortunately the rain made us change our itinerary and we had to return via asphalt!

From the start, about 25 km of very moderate gradients of about 5 to 8%. From km 18, about 8 km only through forest and a few tunnels that are lit. From Truden, a very steep descent, sometimes 18%, on side roads with little traffic. It really puts a strain on the brake pads 😀. Up to km 18, there …
