Itxassou to Mount Mondarrain

This magnificent route departing from Itxassou offers a beautiful diversity of landscapes and atmospheres. Affordable for the day by everyone, it climbs to the summit of Mondarrain from the center of the village before returning via the famous Pas de Roland.

You leave the picturesque village of Itxassou heading towards the adjoining forest. After crossing a small stream, you begin to gradually gain height. Below the Atharri, the slope rises drastically before reaching the summit. Then, a path leads to the open foothills of Ezkondiaraï.

It is at the end of this pleasant passage that the final ascent towards the Mondarrain really begins. The path goes straight up the slope before entering the forest. Finally, at the cost of a final dry climb, you climb to this emblematic summit of the Basque Country.

Then, you go back down through the forest, before following another path which crosses a small place where there is a Basque pelota wall. You then plunge onto a small stony path which leads to Laxia. A few meters further, on the edge of the Nice, is the famous Pas de Roland. From there, all you have to do is follow the beautiful road which winds through the gorges towards Itxassou.
