The North Crater Flow Trail (not to be confused with the North Crater Trail) is a short, very popular loop trail that takes you along various volcanic formations. On the path, which was only completely renovated and elevated in 2023, you pass seven stations with interesting information boards that allow you to delve deep into the history of the lunar landscape.

The circular route starts at the first parking lot after the visitor center. An elevated footbridge takes you to various cooled lava flows such as Pahoehoe Lava, A'a Lava and Blue Dragon Lava - the latter can be recognized by its bluish shimmer. The North Crater Flow formed during the last of eight eruptive periods that ended around 2,000 years ago.

Particularly impressive are the Cinder Cone Fragments, remnants of cinder cones made of loosely layered phyroclastic material. Ancient trees along the way also indicate from their rings that they are at least 1,350 years old. After this short journey into the geology and history of the area, you arrive back at the parking lot.

The huge lava blocks you see here are sections of a broken crater wall that have been carried along on top of a so-called aa lava flow. Geologists believe that as many as four separate flows came from a vent at or near North Crater.
