Monte Tamaro

Highlight • Summit

At 1,960 meters, the Tamaro is not an extremely difficult summit to climb, but it can rightly be described as an extreme vantage point. It is one of the few vantage points from which, on a clear day, you can see both the lowest (Lago Maggiore at 193 meters) and the highest point in Switzerland (Dufourspitze at 4,634 meters).

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Tour of Monte Tamaro Trail begin?

The hike typically starts at Alpe Foppa, which is conveniently accessible by cable car. This area also serves as a hub for various amenities and activities.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain varies significantly. Initially, you'll find a wide gravel road leading towards the Tamaro Hut. As you ascend towards the Monte Tamaro summit, the path becomes narrower and more rugged, featuring rocky sections that can be steep and may involve loose rock or light climbing. The descent often includes alpine pastures before returning to Alpe Foppa on a relatively flatter path.

What makes this trail a moderate difficulty hike?

The Tour of Monte Tamaro Trail is classified as a medium-difficulty hike (T2 on the SAC scale). While parts of the initial ascent are casual, the section from Tamaro Hut to the peak involves narrow, rocky paths and some climbing. Good physical fitness and sure-footedness are required, especially on steep and uneven sections.

What kind of views can I expect from the summit?

From the 1,962-meter summit of Monte Tamaro, you can enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views. These include Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore, various valleys, and towns like Bellinzona, Locarno, and Ascona. On clear days, you might even see the Swiss Pre-Alps, Monte Rosa, and the Matterhorn, as well as parts of the Po Valley in Italy.

What are the main points of interest on the trail?

Beyond the stunning views from the Monte Tamaro summit, you'll pass by Alpe Foppa, the Tamaro Hut, and Motto Rotondo. The Scenic Trail Between Alpe Duragno and Alpe Foppa offers beautiful alpine scenery. Near Alpe Foppa, you can also find the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, designed by Mario Botta.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

While not explicitly stated, the mention of cable car access and alpine pastures suggests that late spring, summer, and early autumn are generally the best times to hike, when the weather is milder and the trails are clear of snow. Always check local weather conditions before you go.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Proper hiking shoes with good grip are essential due to the rocky and potentially steep sections. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability, especially on uneven or slippery parts. Dress in layers suitable for changing mountain weather, and bring sufficient water and snacks.

Is this a loop trail?

Yes, the Tour of Monte Tamaro Trail is designed as a loop. It typically starts and ends at Alpe Foppa, guiding you up to the summit and then back down via a different path that skirts the mountain.

Does this trail connect with other hiking routes?

Yes, the Monte Tamaro area is a hub for various outdoor activities. This route shares sections with the Monte Tamaro Bike (57%), Lugano Bike Tappa 3 (50%), Sentiero Lago di Lugano (40%), and Sentiero Lago di Lugano (31%). Monte Tamaro also serves as the starting point for the famous high-altitude traverse to Monte Lema.

Is the Tour of Monte Tamaro Trail dog-friendly?

The trail is generally dog-friendly, but it's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with livestock (like the alpine pastures with cows and goats) and on narrow, rocky sections for safety. Check local regulations regarding cable car access for dogs.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this hike?

There is no specific permit or entrance fee required to hike the trail itself. However, you will likely need to purchase a ticket for the cable car to reach Alpe Foppa, which is the typical starting point for the hike.

Are there facilities or amenities near the trailhead?

Yes, Alpe Foppa, the starting point, offers a range of amenities. These include an alpine coaster, a zip line, a large playground, and an adventure park, making it a destination with options beyond just hiking. There are also likely refreshment options available.

Wonderful mountain hike with pleasant temperatures. Good footwear required.

The total difference in altitude according to Garmin would be 720m because there are several ups and downs.

A very nice hiking tour on Monte Tamaro 🏔🚶‍♂️🏔🏔 From Rivera, the gondola takes you up to Alpe Foppa, from there on the left side along the mountain slope to Alpe Duragno, from where you can reach Camusio via a small, short climb. From there you have a good view of Lake Lugano. The path continues with a short climb to Cima Torrione, from whose summit even larger parts of Lake Lugano can be seen. From Cima Torrione there is a short descent (although here the path is already partly overgrown and difficult to find in some parts), before then another climb to the saddle towards Monte Tamaro. From the saddle, you can go slightly left and climb a little higher to the Motto Rotondo, but you can't really see more of it (just a simple grassy hill 😉). The path then continues to the highest point of the circuit, Monte Tamaro (you can also hike a little along the mountainside like we did, and then climb up from the other side, making a mini crossing of it 😁). From the summit of Monte Tamaro you have a wonderful all-round view, and you can also see both lakes - Lago Maggiore & Lago di Lugano - and invite you to take a long break. After this panoramic experience, it's the same way back to the Scharte and on to a 🍻 at the Capanna Tamaro to enjoy the wonderful panorama again before heading back down the valley to Alpe Foppa and the mountain station. Unfortunately, we didn't have a clear view today, but we could see both lakes well, only the distant mountains could only be seen dimly. Was and is a very rewarding round 👍😎👌
