Repeating a tour we did in 2014. A lively little town, lots of nature, and repeated traces of war—even two wars: Automatic translation of the inscription on a memorial stone: "Here in the Hermitage, in December 1944 and January 1945, thanks to God's help and the warm welcome of the R. Lambin-Siville family, around fifty residents of Houffalize escaped the bombing of Houffalize. In the name of the last survivors of this tragedy: Thank you! In December 2004, Louis Distaire." The core of Houffalize was completely destroyed. Later along the trail: a memorial to Henri Sebald, according to the inscription, the first French soldier to fall in Belgium in 1914.
A walk through the forest, the fields and the wild valley of the Ourthe in Houffalize. During the Ardennes offensive, the town was occupied by the Germans for several weeks and then often became the target of Allied bombers. 189 civilians were killed; 350 houses were destroyed. It is therefore not surprising that on this short walk you will encounter memorial sites related to WWII at various places.
