Biking Monte Tamaro August 12th, 2021 "Nonstop uphill" Weather: nice / + 26 ° C Summer is just celebrating its comeback and I was looking forward to a bike tour without a match, without the many treacherous, slippery, wet spots and all the dirt on my face 🙂 The “Summer Comeback Tour” took me to Monte Tamaro, which towers in the sunshine of Switzerland. At the parking lot of the mountain railway in Rivera, I started the challenging tour shortly before 8 a.m. After a few meters I was already in the "non-stop uphill" on Monte Tamaro. Now about 1400 vertical meters wanted to be conquered in one go, without flat sections. The first 1000 meters in altitude to Alp Foppa were easy to ride. The path here ran on asphalt and a dirt road, and the forest gave me pleasant shade. I took a short break on Alp Foppa and strengthened myself a little. Up here at 1530 meters above sea level stands the Santa Maria degli Angeli, a chapel that was designed by Mario Botta from 1990 to 1992. After a short break, a visit to the chapel and a few unbelievably beautiful views of the valley, I went up to the Swisscom antenna system. This section was tough and I could only ride the bike for the first few meters, after that the steep path, with the rough, slippery stones, forced me off the bike and pushing was announced. The fantastic view made me look into the distance again and again, it was almost as if I were flying over Ticino in a plane. After the antenna system I passed the SAC hut Capanna Tamaro. Here the path runs right through the terrace of the hut, which was built for military purposes during the First World War. Since the path now offered a few exposed spots, I got off the bike for my safety and continued on foot for the next few meters, and I was able to enjoy the view over Ticino much better by pushing. Now it would go down the valley to Agno for the next 24km. The section of the route is very technical and challenging, especially at the beginning. Coarse rubble, blocked spots and high heels challenged me skillfully. Later, in the cool woods, it got a bit more flowing and I made good progress. The 24km downhill was tough, the many technical points required constant concentration and the whole body was always under tension to keep the bike on the track. From Agno I drove the last 16km through villages on the road back to my starting point. The sun was now mercilessly down from the blue sky and my Garmin showed a temperature of + 37 ° C. The exhausting tour took its toll. On the last 5 kilometers, painful cramps in my thighs forced me off the bike a few times, only to relieve the cramps during a few steps. But I arrived at the starting point well and completely exhausted, with a big smile on my face. https://infinityflow.ch/biken-monte-tamaro-12-8-2021/
I'm on vacation this week, but it was only a day trip because the weather was nowhere suitable for us. Get up at 4 a.m. and before the first traffic jam through the Gotthard. Then there was a luxury problem, too early at the Tamarobahn, then a quick look at the trailer and it had to be earned, but it was more than worth it. Turned out to be a technical trail at its finest. Then up to the Tamaro and afterwards a trail fireworks at its finest. Always an absolute pleasure and includes everything a biker's heart desires👍 Then comfortably cycled back to Rivera and review the trails again and again. Was brilliant and calls for repetition on a beautiful autumn day.
I would probably do the ascent to Monte Tamaro next time by train. Actually just steep and you can't see anything. But rather over to Monte Lema.
