The average mountain biker can expect to complete this 4.5 km (2.8 mile) loop in approximately 28 minutes. However, your actual time may vary depending on your skill level and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
The loop offers diverse terrain. The Slim Shady Trail section is generally flowy with red dirt surfaces, some slickrock, and dry wash crossings. In contrast, the Made in the Shade Trail is more technical, featuring packed dirt, rocks, prominent slickrock, twisty ups and downs, and tight switchbacks.
This loop is generally considered difficult for mountain biking. While the Slim Shady Trail portion is often rated easy to intermediate, the Made in the Shade Trail is significantly more challenging and often classified as expert-level due to very technical uphill sections and prominent slickrock. Beginners may find themselves hike-a-biking frequently.
Riders are treated to continuous, stunning red rock scenery. You'll get impressive views of iconic formations like Bell Rock, Courthouse Butte, and other majestic buttes that define the Sedona landscape. The 'Made in the Shade' section also provides some pleasant treed, shaded areas.
The trailhead is conveniently located off Highway 179. Parking is available at spots such as Yavapai Vista. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, as parking can fill up quickly.
While there isn't a specific permit required for mountain biking the Slim Shady and Made in the Shade Loop itself, you may need a Red Rock Pass for parking at certain trailheads within the Coconino National Forest. Check the latest regulations for the specific parking area you plan to use.
The trail is generally dog-friendly, but dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to pack out all pet waste to help keep the trails clean and enjoyable for everyone.
The best times to ride are typically spring and fall when temperatures are milder. Summers can be very hot, making early morning or late afternoon rides preferable. Winters are generally pleasant, though occasional cold snaps or snow can occur.
Yes, both the Slim Shady Trail and Made in the Shade Trail are part of a larger interconnected trail system. The route passes through sections of the Slim Shady #173, Made in the Shade #173C, and Agave #173B trails, and connects to others like Templeton and Hiline, allowing for customized longer or shorter rides.
This trail is shared by both mountain bikers and hikers. Always be aware of others, yield to hikers, and announce your presence when approaching from behind. Maintain a safe speed, especially on blind corners, and practice 'leave no trace' principles.
While some sections have average signage, especially at junctions, an offline GPS track is highly recommended for navigation. The interconnected nature of the trails means it's easy to take a wrong turn if you're not paying attention.
