Trail Reviews

Der wahre Olaf
May 13, 2025, BE-Ardennes: Les Crêtes - Panorama sur les courbes de la Semois- Rundweg ab Herbeumont

A beautiful tour, first along a rocky ridge with magnificent views of the Semois Valley, and then along the Semois River for the second half. The water temperature already allowed us to successfully attempt the ford and photograph the flowering aquatic plants.

Komoot described the probability of rain for today as 0%. We still took capes with us and that was a good thing. But despite a few short and heavy showers, it was a nice hike. First a short climb to the castle of Herbeumont with great views of the Semoir river and the forest ridges. Particularly beautiful: the path over the Tombe de Chevalier ridge. After a short descent, it is then a comfortable walk back along the river.

Another fantastic hike over a beautiful, slightly technical trail on the ridge between the loops of the Semois. We start in the village of Herbeumont. There we discover the unmistakable structures of a disused railway line: a viaduct, a deep rock cut, and a bridge over it. The route is described as BE 163a on Bahntrassenradeln (https://www.bahntrassenradeln.de/details/be163a.htm). However, we head for the castle ruins, which tower over the settlement and also protected the peninsula. An impressive fortress with a moat, outer bailey, and two defensive rings. Via a very beautiful trail, we walk past the castle and ascend the ridge. Especially on the left, the rock drops steeply as we climb higher and higher over rocky steps. At the turn of the Semois, we descend comparatively gently and find ourselves back on the bank. A simple field path leads along the riverbank back to the starting point. Conclusion: Both trail sections are very worthwhile and the castle ruins are culturally rewarding. Great tour!
