This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from Alpe di Neggia, which is a mountain pass. You can reach Alpe di Neggia by Postbus, which offers a scenic journey with many hairpin bends. For those driving, parking is available at Alpe di Neggia.
The terrain is diverse, featuring well-marked paths and pleasant mule tracks. As you ascend towards Monte Gambarogno, you'll encounter winding paths through forests, open grassy ridges, and sections with roots, rocks, and steps. Some parts of the ridge might be overgrown. Sure-footedness and sturdy shoes are essential.
You'll be treated to spectacular panoramic views throughout the hike. From the summit of Monte Gambarogno, you'll get breathtaking 360-degree vistas of Lake Maggiore, the Maggia Delta, Locarno, and Ascona. The views extend to the majestic Monte Rosa massif, the Mischabel mountain group, and Basòdino. The trail also passes through areas with flourishing beech and chestnut trees, and the wild Cedullo Valley with an imposing waterfall.
Yes, the Monte Gambarogno Loop Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the varied terrain which includes rocky sections and potentially overgrown paths, ensure your dog is fit for a moderate to difficult hike. Always keep your dog under control, especially around grazing animals or other hikers.
Thanks to its moderate altitude and southern exposure, the trail is often accessible year-round. However, the best times are typically spring, summer, and autumn when the weather is most favorable for hiking. Always check local weather conditions before you go.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Monte Gambarogno Loop Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, there are a few options. Near the starting point, you'll find the Ritrovo di Neggia restaurant at Alpe di Neggia. Near the summit, Capanna Gambarögn is a renovated mountain hut offering a place to rest, eat, and even stay overnight. Additionally, at Alpe Cedullo, you can taste and purchase locally produced cheese.
Beyond the natural beauty, you can visit the Oratorio di Sant'Anna, an isolated chapel near the Italian border known for its valuable frescoes. The trail can also include a visit to Indemini, a unique Ticino village built entirely of local gneiss, preserving its traditional mountain character.
For a more serene experience, consider hiking this trail as it is often less crowded than other popular routes in the region. Starting early from Alpe di Neggia can help you enjoy the panoramic views in tranquility before more hikers arrive.
The Monte Gambarogno Loop Trail is generally considered to be of moderate to hard difficulty. It requires good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. Some segments may demand very good fitness and alpine experience, corresponding to SAC ratings of 2-3 or even 4-6 for more challenging sections.
The journey over the winding pass road to the Alpe di Neggia is mega. From the top of Monte Gambarogno there is a great panorama over Lake Maggiore.
A beautiful circular hike with recurring panoramic views of Lake Maggiore. From Alpe di Neggia (1,385 m above sea level), the initial climb is quite steep across the alpine pasture. Soon, you'll catch your first glimpse of Lake Maggiore. A moderate climb follows to Monte Gambarogno (1,734 m above sea level), offering views of the northern end of the lake (Gulfs of Locarno and Ascona). The hike then continues across alpine pastures, later through a landscape of ferns and birch trees, and continues downhill to Alpe Cedullo. There, you can sample the homemade specialties (including goat cheese and lamb salami, cakes and gateaux) or purchase them to take home.
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough electricity to record the tour to the end, i.e. back to the starting point. So don't forget the power bank. :) In the village there is a very nice restaurant with delicious cakes and hot dishes. Be sure to include it as a reward.
Very nice hike! In good weather, a wide view of the lake. Decent ascent at the beginning and sometimes quite rocky descent. Definitely recommended!
