This route was planned by komoot.
This is a challenging hike, rated as 'difficult' by komoot. It involves a significant elevation gain of over 620 meters and is best suited for hikers with good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. Some sections may be rugged and steep, aligning with demanding mountain hikes.
The loop tour starts from the shores of Lake Maggiore, likely in the Gambarogno area. While specific parking details aren't provided, you would typically find parking in the villages along the lake. For public transport, look for bus or ferry connections to towns like Vira Gambarogno, which is a common starting point for hikes in this region.
You can expect varied terrain, including forested paths, potentially a chestnut forest, and rugged, steep sections as you ascend. The trail offers panoramic views, so some parts will be exposed, while others provide shade. It's a mountain hike, so expect natural, unpaved surfaces.
The trail offers several rewarding sights. You'll pass by the Botanical Garden of Gambarogno. The highlight of the ascent is the View of Lake Maggiore from Sass da Grüm, and you'll also get stunning vistas of Lake Maggiore, Ascona, and Locarno from Monti di Piazzogna. Sasd da Grüm itself is known as a 'flower and plant paradise'.
While specific restrictions aren't noted, challenging mountain trails like this one require dogs to be well-behaved, on a leash, and accustomed to steep, rugged terrain. Ensure your dog has the stamina for a nearly 4-hour hike with significant elevation gain. Always carry water for your dog.
No, typically, hiking trails in this region, including the Ascent to Sasd da Grüm, do not require permits or entrance fees. However, if you visit specific attractions like the Botanical Garden, there might be an entry fee for those particular sites.
The best time to hike is generally from spring through autumn. Spring offers blooming flowers, while autumn provides pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer can be warm, but the forested sections, possibly including a chestnut forest, offer shade. Always check weather conditions before you go, especially for mountain trails.
Yes, there is a hotel and restaurant located at Sasd da Grüm itself. This makes for an excellent stop to refuel and enjoy the views after the strenuous ascent, making the effort even more worthwhile.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Grand Tour del Lago Maggiore ® - Tappa 8 - Maccagno - Pino - Zenna - Vira Gambarogno (CH), the Cammino del Lago Maggiore - Tappa Vira (Gambarogno) - Maccagno, and smaller portions of the Sentiero Ponte Vecchio, Sentiero Buetti, Canton Dent, and Accesso torrente.
Given its 'difficult' rating and nearly 4-hour duration, you should bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate layers of clothing. Trekking poles can be helpful for the steep sections. A first-aid kit and a fully charged phone are also recommended.
Due to its 'difficult' rating, significant elevation gain, and rugged terrain, this trail is generally not recommended for young children or families seeking an easy outing. It requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness, making it more suitable for experienced hikers.
Sass da Grüm is a beautiful place in Ticino with 70000 Bovis units. There is a hotel and seminar house. The focus here is on organic. The place is an old Celtic ritual place. But no no, I don't swing my dancing leg around the campfire and worship a stone :). Just nice and quiet here. The place can only be reached on foot. The luggage is brought up with the gondola. The view over the lake is gorgeous and the garden is enchanting. Now I'm going on to another valley, it's a bit too "hype" here for me;)
