This route spans 5.6 miles (9.1 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2143 feet (653 metres), typically completed in about 3 hours and 49 minutes. As you hike, you will circle the impressive Provenzale/Castello mountain group, passing dramatic rock faces like Rocca Provenzale and Torre Castello, offering a rewarding experience with stunning views.
Planning your visit is best during the summer and autumn months when conditions are most favorable for hiking. The trail is generally well-traced, but be aware that some sections can be steep, and the siliceous rock may become slippery if wet. This trail climbs steadily towards Colle Greguri, providing panoramic views of the Chiappera basin and the head of the Valle Maira. In early summer, you might witness the spectacular Stroppia waterfalls in full flow, adding to the natural beauty of the area. Keep an eye out for ibex at higher elevations, as these majestic animals are often seen in this rugged environment.

This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts from the village of Chiappera in the upper Valle Maira. You'll find parking options available in or near the village, which serves as the gateway to this impressive mountain group.
The recommended seasons for hiking this trail are summer and autumn. If you want to see the spectacular Stroppia Waterfall in its full glory, June is an excellent time as it's when it's in full flow.
While not explicitly stated, generally dogs are allowed on trails in this region. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife like ibex at higher elevations, and to ensure you clean up after them.
Based on available information, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Tour of the Provenzale/Castello – Valle Maira group trail.
The trail features varied terrain. You'll start on a path climbing steadily towards Colle Greguri, encountering green valleys, stony stretches, and winding paths. The route passes dramatic rock faces and is characterized by a "magnificent quartzite spur" and siliceous rock, which can become slippery when wet.
You'll experience breathtaking panoramic views of the Chiappera basin and the head of the Valle Maira. Notable sights include the dramatic rock faces of Rocca Provenzale, Torre Castello, and Rocca Castello. You'll also pass the Colle Greguri (Greguri Pass), a military bunker, and charming stone huts like Grange Collet. Don't miss the Stroppia Waterfall, especially in June.
At higher elevations, particularly around Colle Greguri, it's not uncommon to spot ibex. The military bunker at the pass is even known as a springtime gathering spot for large groups of them.
Yes, the trail offers several stunning viewpoints. You'll get incredible views of the Chiappera basin, the impressive Rocca Provenzale and Torre Castello from the View of Rocca and Torre Castello, and splendid vistas towards the head of the Valle Maira, including the View of the Vallone del Maurin during the descent.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other official trails. You'll find it intersects with parts of the Alte Valli - Tappa 07, Tour du Bric de Rubren, Grand tour du Chambeyron, and Sentiero Roberto Cavallero, among others.
This is a loop itinerary, circling the impressive Provenzale/Castello mountain group. This means you'll experience new scenery throughout your hike without retracing your steps.
The Provenzale/Castello peaks are not only visually striking but also historically significant in mountaineering. Rocca Provenzale, for example, has a fascinating history tied to a parish priest's vow. The area is also a renowned climbing destination with over 100 routes, so you might even see climbers on the vertical walls.
The Anello del Colle Greguri quotes the brochure of the Rifugio Campo Base di Chiappera, it is one of the most spectacular in the entire Valle Maira, a wonderful valley, because it is difficult to reach, given that the roads are narrow and winding and do not allow large flows of tourists .. then here there are no ski lifts and therefore the mountain offers all its beauty, rugged and wild, still uncontaminated as we like it .. The tour begins just before the Campo Base, taking the asphalt road that goes up and after the second bend you turn onto the path with the ball on the right, which goes up in the meadows joining the path that comes from the Borgata Chiappera, then the path goes up harder, well marked until reaching Colle Greguri at m. 2319.. keep in mind that in just over 4.4 km you climb the entire 680 m difference in altitude of the tour.. the views that you see during the tour are varied and of rare beauty and you meet very few people.. after the Greguri hill, the path descends between large meadows and then descends again until you reach the Grange Rivero.. then always descending you ford the stream and proceed towards the Grange Collette, follow the mule track on the left that leads to the Grange Ciabera, after crossing the road always downhill, you proceed first arriving towards the base of the Stroppia waterfalls and then subsequently you arrive again at the start of the Campo Base Campeggio ⛺️, beautiful tour recommended to all those who have a bit of training and resistance to the climb, especially because it is all found immediately in the first two hours of the tour 😁
Great tour with great views, definitely doable with a certain level of fitness. Highly recommended 😀
After we were advised not to take a camper van from Valle Grana to Gardetta, we arrived in Valle Maira a day earlier. Right at the Refugio Campo Base, which also rents out parking spaces, we start to circumnavigate the impressive Rocca Castello Provenzale group. On the way to Colle Greguri, the mountain meadows at 2,000m are in their best bloom. A little further up, the top of the pass is already clearly visible, the color spectacle is over, goats and sheep are filling their bellies. In many bends it goes down again, the beautifully restored Chiappera is reached in an hour.

We are the other way around than the recommendation. Slowly steadily uphill, then crisply back down. Very nice trail to walk well.
Great hike, great views and even a few marmots.
