The Boucle de Downhill Col de Mille depuis Champsec is a demanding route, best suited for experienced mountain bikers with very good fitness and advanced riding skills. You should be comfortable with technical descents, varied terrain, and potentially pushing your bike on some sections.
You'll encounter a highly varied terrain, starting with alpine-style singletrack, technical rock gardens, and roots. As you descend, it transitions into shaped turns, some jumps, high-speed sections, and forest paths. Expect steep, loose, and dusty sections, as well as river crossings and a bridge with stairs.
This trail offers awe-inspiring high alpine scenery with exceptional panoramic views. You'll see vistas stretching between the Val de Bagnes and the iconic Massif du Mont Blanc, especially along the epic ridge line. The landscape changes from open alpine environments to wooded areas as you descend.
The trail starts from Champsec, so you should look for parking options within the village. Specific parking areas for trail access are usually signposted locally. It's advisable to check local municipality websites for the most current parking information.
The best time to ride this trail is typically during the summer and early autumn months, from late June to September or early October. This avoids snow at higher elevations and ensures the trail is dry and accessible. Always check local weather and trail conditions before you go.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to ride natural mountain bike trails like the Boucle de Downhill Col de Mille depuis Champsec. However, it's always good practice to check with local tourism offices or Verbier region authorities for any specific regulations or temporary restrictions.
While many trails in the region allow dogs, the demanding and technical nature of this particular downhill route, with varied terrain and high-speed sections, might not be suitable for all dogs. If you do bring your dog, ensure they are fit enough for the challenge and always keep them on a leash, especially in alpine areas and near livestock.
Along the route, you'll pass by significant highlights such as the Singletrack Below Six Blanc and the Col de Mille itself. The Col de Mille Downhill Trail is a key part of the experience. The Col de Mille hut also serves as a resting point before the main descent.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. You'll find sections that are part of the Chemins pédestres, région Bagnes, Tour du Val de Bagnes, and the Tour des Combins - stage 2 - CABANE COL DE MILLE - CABANE BRUNET. Other intersecting trails include the 32-Alpine Passes Trail and the Trail Verbier St-Bernard - Traversée.
Given the trail's difficulty and length, you should bring appropriate mountain biking gear, including a well-maintained full-suspension bike, helmet, protective pads, and gloves. Carry plenty of water, snacks, a repair kit, first-aid supplies, and navigation tools. Layered clothing is recommended due to changing alpine weather.
The route involves a significant ascent to Col de Mille. While the overall tour is a downhill loop, reaching the Col requires considerable effort. Many riders choose to use e-bikes to assist with the climb, or plan for a challenging analog ascent. The Col de Mille hut offers a good spot to rest and refuel before beginning the exhilarating descent.
On the way to the Aosta Valley, I added the wonderful tour to the Colle de Mille. The start is at a small parking lot before Champsec. From there, the climb is mostly very pleasant. I also included the small Bisse, since I'm already in Valais. From there, the route continues very moderately on forest and alpine roads almost to the Colle de Mille. The last few meters have to be pushed, even with the eMTB. From the Colle, the flowing fun really begins. Not too steep, the descent is without any major steps. From the small lake, the terrain gets steeper, but it's still very rideable. There are no particular cruxes to tackle, apart from a very fun but challenging series of switchbacks, three of which you have to tackle by the bottom. I highly recommend this tour, both for eMTBs and for e-bikes.
A truly beautiful outing. We thought we would save a bit of altitude by taking the cable car from Le Châble, but it closes at the beginning of September... So we had to pedal a bit more than expected (there are still a few hundred metres missing from my route, because I forgot to turn on the GPS. The starting point is the same as the arrival point.) For the rest, it was just breathtaking with these red blueberry bushes against a backdrop of mountains sprinkled with fresh snow. It was sometimes a bit greasy on the way down, but there too an incredible route between the Col de Mille and Bruson.
Super easily shaped natural trail! In September the gondola and the post bus no longer run...so we put everything up ourselves. For me one of the most beautiful nature trails!!! Fabuleux
The descent from Col de Mille to Champsec today was one of the best trail descents I have ever ridden 💯🇨🇭👍🏻.
Took a gondola from Le Chable for once... The further ascent on gravel is pleasant and interrupted once by an ingenious slope trail. The second trail before the col is partially mobile. The last 70 Hm wear is announced. Once at the top, a phenomenal view of the Mont Blanc massif - if the clouds allow it.... The trail is a piece of cake! 1,700 m of trail fun!
One last shimmy in the Alps... better make it a good'un! Legs were honestly wrecked after the last two days of big downhill hikes - so stretched some different muscles (with the help of a battery) 😉. Borrowed the e-MTB again, and took the cable car up one final time to Moay for a morning 'spin'. Honestly this was 10x harder than I had expected... An easy climb up dirt roads for the first few km, before a nice singletrack section around the side of the mountain which I remembered from my last visit. From there things got a little more technical, with a natural trail that snaked even higher around the mountain. Quite surreal to be hitting the snow line in July! The descent was one of the longest (and most enjoyable) I've ever done on an MTB. It just went on and on and on... A bit tough for me in places (I'm not much of a mountain-biker) but so so fun. I'll be sad to leave this place!
