This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is officially known as the PR04SJO Pico do Pedro – Pico da Esperança – Fajã do Ouvidor. It also covers 100% of the GR02SJO Grande Rota de São Jorge (Etapa 2).
The Komoot route for the Pico do Pedro - Pico da Esperança - Fajã do Ouvidor Trail is approximately 11.4 km (7.1 miles) long and typically takes around 3 hours and 17 minutes to complete. The official trail length is 16.9 km (10.5 miles) and is generally estimated to take about 4 hours.
This trail is rated as moderate difficulty. While the elevation gain is manageable, there is a significant descent of about 1000 meters towards Fajã do Ouvidor, which can be challenging. Hikers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be prepared for varied terrain.
The trail begins on a dirt road, then follows the central mountain range, circling volcanic peaks. While some sections offer classic trail experiences, a significant portion, especially the descent to Fajã do Ouvidor, includes wide gravel roads and some tarmac sections. The final stretch can be a long, concrete downhill.
You'll experience breathtaking panoramic views, especially from Pico da Esperança, the island's highest point. Highlights include the View of Mount Pico, the View of Morro Pelado, and the Pico da Esperança Crater Lake. On clear days, you might see neighboring islands like Graciosa, Terceira, Pico, and Faial.
The trail passes through protected areas, offering a chance to observe diverse native flora such as Hypericum foliosum, Vaccinium cylindraceum, Frangula azorica, and Ilex azorica. The landscape is characterized by lush green pastures and volcanic cones.
The Azores generally have a mild climate, but weather can change rapidly, especially at higher altitudes. For the best experience, consider hiking during the drier months, typically from late spring to early autumn. Always check the forecast before you go.
The trail begins near Pico do Pedro. As this is a linear route, you'll need to arrange transportation for both the start and end points. Specific parking details for the trailhead are not provided, so consider local transport options or a shuttle service.
Information regarding dogs on this specific trail is not explicitly provided. Given it passes through protected areas, it's advisable to check local regulations or signage regarding pets before bringing your dog.
The trail is located within the Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species of Pico da Esperança and Central Plateau. While specific permits or entrance fees for hiking are not mentioned, it's always good practice to check the official Azores tourism or park websites (e.g., visitazores.com or azores.gov.pt) for any updated regulations or requirements before your visit.
Given the potential for rapidly changing weather and significant elevation changes, it's recommended to bring proper footwear, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, and sufficient water. Layers are always a good idea for the variable conditions on the ridge.
The long, concrete downhill section towards Fajã do Ouvidor can be less appealing for some hikers. If you prefer to avoid this, consider hiking an out-and-back route to Pico da Esperança instead of completing the full linear descent to Fajã do Ouvidor.
What a day! The clouds have cleared the highlands 🤗, and the sun is bathing the island in its brightest colors. 🌤️And we love it! 💚 After a few highlights that had started the day, we wanted to climb Pico da Esperança. The "Mountain of Hope" is the highest peak on the Azores island of São Jorge and, like everything here, is of volcanic origin. Its last eruption was in 1808, and today everything shines a fabulous green. With a clear sky, you could see all the islands of the Azores archipelago from up here. A landscape that will stay with us forever. 🥰🙏
