This route was planned by komoot.
The trail is conveniently located above Sion in the Valais region of Switzerland. You can reach it by car, and there are also specific bus routes that lead directly to the trailhead, making it accessible via public transport.
The trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the narrow paths, cliffside sections, and suspension bridges, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash and ensure they are comfortable with such terrain. Always be mindful of other hikers.
The best time to hike this trail is typically between June and October. During these months, the weather is most favorable, and the trail conditions are ideal for enjoying the unique features and stunning views.
No, you do not need a permit, and there are no entrance fees required to hike the Bisse de Savièse (Torrent-Neuf) Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain varies, following the historic irrigation canal. You'll encounter sections where the bisse was dug into earth, carved into solid rock, or features impressive wooden channels suspended along cliff faces. The path includes several sections that hug steep cliff edges, which are equipped with fencing for safety. A head for heights is essential due to these dramatic cliffside paths and several swaying suspension bridges.
The full out-and-back trail is approximately 8 km (5 miles) long. It typically takes between 3 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views and historical information.
The trail is rich in unique features. You'll experience the historic bisse system itself, with its various medieval construction techniques. Major highlights include the three or four prominent Suspension Bridges, which offer thrilling passages and unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Rhône Valley. You can also visit St. Margaret's Chapel and spot the Bear Statue on the Bisse du Siphon Trail.
No, the trail is explicitly not recommended for individuals who suffer from vertigo. The presence of dramatic cliffside paths and several swaying suspension bridges can be very challenging for those uncomfortable with heights.
While the trail is largely flat and considered easy to moderate, some sections require a 'head for heights' due to cliffside paths and suspension bridges. It is suitable for sure-footed children, but smaller children may need to be carried in certain areas. Always assess your child's comfort with heights before embarking on the hike.
This bisse, built between 1430 and 1448, was a remarkable engineering feat designed to transport water from the Morge River to irrigate the fields and vineyards of Savièse. The trail provides a fascinating insight into the various medieval construction techniques used, including canals dug in earth, cut into rock, and wooden channels mounted directly onto rock faces. Educational installations along the path further explain its history.
While the trail itself is a natural experience, it is located above Sion, which offers various amenities. You can find cafes, pubs, and accommodation options in the nearby villages or in Sion itself before or after your hike.
A totally easy hike at a breathtaking height, right on the edge of the cliff. 🤩🤩 This bisse was built in the 15th century by brave winemakers who grew wine in the area around Savièse. It's amazing what these people achieved at that time 😳💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 At the Buvette at the back there is an additional guided tour in French or English for CHF 5.-, which explains the work and the procedure really well - highly recommended. 👍 ... by the way, the tour also ends at A, I forgot to end the tour recording again 😂
A wonderful autumn hike, without a lot of hills, but history and a zoo included along the way.
Parking is also possible closer to the starting point. The predicted crowds have not materialized.
The hiking trail runs parallel to a "Bisse" (also called "Suone"), an artificial aqueduct that was used to supply Savièse with water. Today it is hard to imagine the courage and energy it took to dig the kilometers of open channels into the rock, to lay the wooden channels and barely foot-wide walkways made of simple boards along rock faces and across gorges. Today the hiking trail is well secured with railings and ropes, the gorges are overcome by 4 metal 100m long, airy suspension bridges. Absolutely impressive!
A tour which initially follows root paths along the moat. There is a chapel and a café and a place to rest. We continue to the first suspension bridge of a total of four. The trail later leads over wooden footbridges along the rock face. The suspension bridges are narrow long and sway a bit. Thrills and adrenaline rushes included. Even a bear stands in the middle of the path, even if it's only made of metal. 😱🐻 The path becomes increasingly narrow but is secured with railings and chains. You usually walk along the rock face next to the old gullies and sometimes through a tunnel. Car park P2 is closer to the start of the trail and more shaded than car park P1. If you want to follow the tour you should start from there. The menu in the cafe and probably also in the restaurant is French. So didn't come back.
A wonderful tour. Even if you walk back the same way, it looks very different. We were even lucky enough to see two chamois. Just great and highly recommended.
This sometimes dizzying tour is not for those afraid of heights. The Bisse du Torrent-Neuf is an impressive bisse - i.e. a historic water pipe - in the canton of Valais. It was signposted by an association with old photographs and developed as a hiking trail with 4 (!) suspension bridges. On the hike you can admire the details of the old techniques and the remains of the buildings built in the 15th century.
