Hiking

The Sentiero Natura Val Falcina loop guides you through a unique V-shaped valley, deeply carved into Dolomia Principale rock, revealing impressive vertical rock layers and small canyons. As you hike through a beautiful mixed forest, you'll enjoy picturesque views of Lake Mis, small waterfalls, and areas with turquoise water, all dramatically enclosed by the dolomitic walls of Mount Pizzocco. This easy hike covers 2.7 miles (4.3 km) with an elevation gain of 862 feet (263 metres), typically taking about 1 hour and 33 minutes to complete.

Start your journey at Pian della Falcina, conveniently located near the artificial Lake Mis, where you'll find amenities like a picnic area, a refreshment point, and parking. The trail is best explored from March to November. While generally easy, some sections feature steep inclines and can be slippery, so wearing appropriate hiking boots is advisable. You will also encounter slightly exposed parts, which are safely protected with wooden parapets and steel ropes.

This trail stands out for its educational value, with information boards along the route explaining the area's geology, botany, and fauna. The valley's unique V-shape is a remarkable example of fluvial incision influenced by the significant Faglia del Pizzocco fault, showcasing steep rock layers. It's also a biodiversity hotspot, home to unique plant species and various wildlife, including passerine birds, Golden Eagles, and Grass Snakes, earning it the nickname "Bellunese fjord" for its dramatic beauty.

Lake del Mis

Highlight • Lake

Lake Mis (Lach del Mìs) is a suggestive body of water located between the municipalities of Gosaldo and Sospirolo, in the Belluno Dolomites National Park, between the Monte del Sole and the Feltrine peaks. It was the second most beautiful lake in Italy according to the 2019 ranking drawn up by the Touring Club.

Its nature is of artificial genesis. The dam that holds back the water, 91 meters high and 220 meters long, was built in 1962 near the town of Pascoli and is still used today for the production of hydroelectric energy. The wild appearance of the Mis valley, capable of hiding true environmental and historical treasures with the harshness of its appearance, undoubtedly contributes to the fame that the lake has been able to gain in recent times.

Trail Reviews

Simone 🍂
July 13, 2024, sentiero naturalistico Val Falcina

Departure: near the refreshment/picnic area of Val Falcina in Val del Mis Travel times: 1.45 hours Simple circular hike; glimpses of the lake can be seen at the beginning and end of the journey. Val del Mis is a very busy area in summer, so I recommend arriving early in the morning

Beautiful circular trail in the mis valley, starting from the Val Falcina refreshment point, all in the middle of the well-kept and well-signposted wood. (The parking lot is located in front of the refreshment point) Practically everything in the woods then you get halfway there are waterfalls where you can take a little break.

If you start on the right side of the river and follow an anti clockwise direction, the first piece is rather steep so if you need time to warm up start on the left side and walk in a clockwise direction.

The route is not "easy" as stated, but on the contrary requires a certain level of fitness and appropriate footwear, preferably hiking boots.

Departure from the refreshment area/visitor center. Simple excursion bypassing part of the lower Val Falcina. You cross three small streams and return easily. Just before emerging onto the asphalt road there is a small promontory that dominates part of the lake for a break.
