Great tour and a really historic fort. A visit is always worthwhile.
Bourtange and Smokkelpad (https://www.komoot.nl/tour/268716731) walked again
Vesting Bourtange is also called the fortress that was never taken. The order for the construction of a first reinforcement of an important passage through the swamp was given in 1580 by none other than William of Orange. The fortress reached its greatest extent in 1742. The information center (entrance building of the fortress) is a base for your visit to the fortress. In addition to a short visual introduction to the history of the fortress, you will find information about present-day Bourtange there. Bourtange Fortress is open all year round. The restaurants and shops have their own opening hours. An entrance fee is charged for the museums of Bourtange Fortress. Combination tickets for the museums are available at the information center.

This afternoon I briefly walked Westerwolde Route 17 along the Soldatendijk in Bourtange. I've now completed 17 of the 40 Westerwolde Routes. It's going along nicely. The route runs through the forecourt of the fortress, an area that could be flooded in case of a threat from the east. Soldiers walked along the dike, keeping watch. Bourtange is a fortress that used to lie on the route from Germany to the city of Groningen and was tasked with defending it. A beautiful walk with canals, bridges, dikes, and of course, stunning scenery.
Today the traditional Christmas market begins in Bourtange Fortress, which is open this weekend and the next two (Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission 5 euros per person, parking free). A nice opportunity to take a short walk around the fortress along the smugglers' paths beforehand. Today we used the parking lot at the southern entrance to the fortress that was specially set up for the Christmas market. A little note about the route: The paths are all easy to walk on, but in the area of the wild horses there are often large piles of horse manure on the path. And right at the beginning we missed the turnoff to the Smokkelpad (so well hidden, no wonder it was a smuggling path 😉) and then had to walk a little way along the road from the Bourtanger path back to the hiking route.
