Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike the Volcán de Martín Loop?

This loop trail is approximately 7.9 kilometers (4.9 miles) long and generally takes around 3 hours and 25 minutes to complete. This duration is for the specific circular route provided by komoot, which offers a concentrated experience of the volcanic landscapes.

What is the difficulty level of this hike?

The Volcán de Martín Loop is rated as moderate. While it doesn't have technical sections, it involves a steady climb on soft volcanic ground. Factors like sun exposure and loose gravel can add to the challenge, and good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended, especially on the lava scree around the crater.

Where does the Volcán de Martín Loop trail start?

The trail conveniently starts and ends at the Los Roques Recreation Area (Área Recreativa Fuente de los Roques), located near Los Canarios (Fuencaliente). This area offers straightforward access and is a popular starting point for exploring the region.

What kind of terrain will I encounter on the route?

You'll experience a diverse and dramatic landscape. The trail begins through pine forests, transitioning to stretches of soft black volcanic sand and open areas with scattered lava. As you ascend, the scenery transforms into striking burnt-red crater dirt and rocky ridgelines, culminating in the distinct burnt-red crater rim of Martín Volcano.

Are there any notable viewpoints or features along the way?

Absolutely. The highlight is undoubtedly the burnt-red crater rim of Martín Volcano, set against dark lava fields. On clear days, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views extending to the neighboring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, and even El Hierro. Inside the crater, there's also a small volcanic cave called Fuente del Fuego, which can form a seasonal water pool after heavy rains.

When is the best time of year to hike the Volcán de Martín Loop?

The trail can be hiked year-round, but spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions with milder temperatures. Summers can be very hot with significant sun exposure, so an early start is advisable. Winters are usually mild, but occasional rain can make the volcanic sand and scree a bit more challenging.

Is the Volcán de Martín Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally permitted on this trail as it is located within Cumbre Vieja Natural Park. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to protect the local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Be mindful of the volcanic terrain, which can be rough on paws, and ensure your dog has enough water, especially on sunny days.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee to hike this trail?

No, you do not need a specific permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike the Volcán de Martín Loop. The trail is freely accessible to the public as part of Cumbre Vieja Natural Park. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known hiking paths?

Yes, the route shares sections with several other official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of El Bastón, Transvulcania, Montaña de Los Faros – Pista general del Este, Pie del Volcán Martín – Fuente de El Tión, and Vereda de Las Cabras, among others. This allows for potential connections to longer routes if you wish to extend your adventure.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the volcanic terrain and sun exposure, essential items include sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water (there are no water sources on the trail), sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and layers of clothing. A trekking pole can be helpful for stability on the loose volcanic scree, especially during descents.

Are there any specific challenges or insider tips for this route?

While rated moderate, the soft volcanic ground and lava scree, particularly on the ascent and descent of the crater, can be more challenging than expected. An insider tip is to start early to avoid the midday sun, which can be intense due to the lack of shade. This trail offers a fantastic, concentrated volcanic experience without the full commitment of the longer Ruta de los Volcanes.

January 21, 2025, Volcán de Martin, Ruta de los Volcanos

To reach the starting point you have to drive up a bumpy road until you reach a big picknick area. From there it goes up through the pine forest walking on lava stone and pine needles. Probably passing some curious cuervos canarios (Canarian crows). The vegetation is getting less...just a view bright green pine trees on the black lava stone. It got super windy when we went up there. But the landscape is just stunning! Walked on a lower level with less wind back though the pine forest. In between when the weather is good you have great view to the ocean.

We skipped the two detours at the crater due to visibility

Fantastic round trip on the volcano de Martin. After a climb through a beautiful, sparse pine forest, you reach the volcanic area. Great colors with black lava, blue sky and yellow canary pines accompany the ascent. Once at the top, a great panoramic view of part of the "Volcano Route", Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.

A somewhat strenuous hike to the Martin volcano, with a descent over the ash fields and crossing of the lava river. You can see very well how nature is reclaiming the area. Take enough water, provisions and trekking poles with you. The descent is very fun. You can park at the picnic area. The way there is feasible with an SUV, you just have to be careful not to sit up. So we were geocaching for a long time. Walking time 3: 25h
