The trail typically starts from the village of Rylstone. Parking can be found within the village, though it's often limited. Arriving earlier in the day is advisable, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on this loop. However, much of the route crosses active farmland with grazing sheep, and sections are within the 'Right to Roam' access area on moorland. It's crucial to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a lead, to protect livestock and ground-nesting birds. Always follow the Countryside Code.
Spring and summer offer the most pleasant conditions with warmer weather and blooming heather on the moorland. Autumn provides beautiful colors. Winter can be challenging due to potentially harsh weather, icy paths, and wet, peaty ground, requiring appropriate gear and experience.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail. It is freely accessible to the public within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
When hiking in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, it's important to follow the Countryside Code. This includes keeping dogs under control, taking all litter home, closing gates, and sticking to public rights of way or designated access land. Be mindful of livestock and protect the natural environment.
The terrain is varied, ranging from farm tracks and fields to gravel paths. As you ascend, you'll encounter heather-clad moorland, which can be rocky, muddy, or peaty and wet underfoot. There are also impressive gritstone outcrops and craggy ridges, requiring sturdy footwear.
This moderate hike, covering approximately 9.7 km (6 miles), usually takes between 2 hours 45 minutes and 4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
You'll pass several significant landmarks, including the prominent Rylstone Cross and the imposing Cracoe Fell War Memorial. The route also offers far-reaching views across the Yorkshire Dales, including Flasby Hill, the Malham Hills, and Wharfedale. You'll also traverse Chapel Lane (Cracoe to Rylstone), which provides excellent vistas.
Both Rylstone and the nearby village of Cracoe offer limited amenities. While Rylstone is known for its 'Calendar Girls' connection, you might find more options for refreshments, such as pubs or cafes, in Cracoe or other larger villages in the area after your hike.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other established paths. You'll find yourself on parts of the NCN Cycle Route 688, the Way of the Roses Cycle Route, and the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway. The trail also utilizes sections of Chapel Lane, Bolton Abbey Bridleway, Fell Lane, Dikelands Lane, Swinden Lane, and Mucky Lane.
While the loop can be hiked in either direction, be aware that the ascent towards Cracoe Fell can be quite steep and strenuous, especially if you opt for the clockwise route. Consider your fitness level and preference for tackling steep climbs when choosing your direction.
Parked in a layby just outside rylstone. Fair few spots but does get busy. After the cross make sure you cross the stile so wall on your left over to cracoe as 2 paths. Cows just at the start in the 1st field you come 2 after the farming vehicles otherwise just sheep. Nice route. Quite steep coming down and a but boggy even In decent weather.
