This loop is considered difficult and requires a very good level of fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy hiking shoes, and some alpine experience. The route involves significant elevation gain and can be strenuous, particularly the ridge section and some steep descents.
The full loop from Monteaperta, covering approximately 18.9 kilometers, generally takes around 7 hours and 23 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
The terrain is diverse, transitioning from an old military mule track (CAI Trail 711) to mountain paths. The ridge section between Punta Lusciovizza and Punta di Montemaggiore features an 'ups and downs' crest, which can be steep and occasionally exposed. Some descents, like along CAI 742, can be steep, affected by landslides, or even covered in snow, requiring caution.
Key highlights include the historic CAI Trail 711 Monteaperta – Sella Kriz, the Ascent to the Cross of Gran Monte from Monteaperta, and the panoramic Sella Kriz Mountain Pass. You'll also traverse the scenic Ridge between Punta Lusciovizza and Punta di Montemaggiore, offering expansive views.
Hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Julian Prealps and the Carnic Alps, especially from the ridge. Sella Kriz offers a splendid panorama of the surrounding valleys, and the ANA Monteaperta refuge provides spectacular vistas of the Paleocarniche, Canin, and Triglav mountains.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and snow has usually melted from the higher elevations. Winter hiking is possible but requires specialized equipment and experience due to snow and ice conditions.
Yes, dogs are generally permitted on this trail. However, given the challenging and occasionally exposed terrain, especially on the ridge, ensure your dog is fit for such a hike and keep them on a leash for their safety and the protection of local wildlife. Be prepared to carry water for your dog as well.
Parking is available in Monteaperta, which serves as the starting and ending point for this loop. Specific parking areas are usually designated near the village center or close to the initial trail access points. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, to secure a spot.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this section of the Il Cammino Celeste or the ridge loop from Monteaperta. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the route passes by the ANA Monteaperta refuge. This refuge can offer a place to rest and enjoy the views. It's always a good idea to check their operating hours and availability if you plan to rely on it for refreshments or shelter.
Yes, this loop integrates with broader networks. The trail to Sella Kriz largely follows CAI Trail 711, and the ANA Monteaperta refuge, located on this route, is also situated on both the Il Cammino Celeste and the Sentiero Italia.
The crest of Montemaggiore is crossed by one of the stages of the itinerary of faith called "Cammino celeste" that starts from Aquileia and arrives at the sanctuary of Mount Lussari. We started from Monteaperta and along the CAI 711 path on a war mule track, with countless hairpin bends, we climbed to Forcella Kriz. The very long crest that from Caporetto in Slovenia through Mount Stol, reaches the Gran Monte or Montemaggiore and Mount Briniza in Italy, represents in some way a red thread that unites two peoples and two states. The goal was to climb Montemaggiore, but once we arrived at Forcella Kriz, we decided to extend the route, going to Briniza. From the fork the first part of the climb on the crest was easy, in one section in particular however, the crest narrows, becomes sharp, and a little exposed, forcing us to advance to the north, the frozen snow made us give up, the tight schedule (since we still had several kilometers of crest to do) did not allow us to dedicate further time. Back on our steps, from Forcella Kriz, the long and exciting ridge of Montemaggiore led to the descent fork. The very steep path, slightly exposed at times, took us back towards Montemaggiore and along the "sentiero delle fonti" at the end of the tour at Monteaperta. A long and highly panoramic tour, in the downhill section you need to be sure-footed in some segments. Pay attention at the fork of the "sentiero delle fonti", an uphill track, visible but not marked on the right of an area of debris.
This ring is truly worth experiencing. Very very beautiful and rewarding for the sight and the spirit.
