Freshwater Bay Promenade

Highlight • Viewpoint

Surrounded by white chalk cliffs, Freshwater Bay is one of the prettiest beaches in West Wight and is a perfect spot for recreation and relaxation. On the beach, you find a mixture of flint and chalk pebbles, which create a unique sound when the waves crash on the shore. Smugglers once used the caves around the bottom of the chalk cliffs that are exposed at low tide. It is possible to explore these but it is advisable to do so with a local guide as you can get stranded when waters rise.

There are superb views of the south coast of the Isle of Wight from high up here at the Trig Point known as Five Barrows. Look carefully around and you will see remnants of its name sake. It is an ancient burial site and remains of the burial chambers, or barrows, are still visible.

It's absolutely worth pausing a moment to appreciate the stunning view to Tennyson Down and Highdown Cliffs. The cliffs peak out over the top of the rolling downland creating a really unique sight.

The Longstone (Isle of Wight)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Legend has it, Saint Catherine threw this huge stone, from the down which bears her name, in a contest with the devil. St Catherine's stone landed upright, whilst the devil's stone (which is much smaller) lies alongside, making an ideal picnic bench.

Mottistone Manor is a National Trust property in the village of Mottistone on the Isle of Wight, England. It has popular gardens and is a Grade II listed building. It was first mentioned in documents associated with the Domesday Book of 1086.

The gardens are created from an abandoned farmhouse and surround an attractive Elizabethan country house. These 20th century gardens experiment with a Mediterranean planting scheme to take advantage of the warm, southern location.

Possibly my favourite road on the Isle of Wight, a footpath traces the Military Road and it is a wonderful place to run with stunning views. On a sunny day, the white chalk path, the white cliffs and the blue skies together look sublime.
