Ivybridge Longtimber Woods – Dartmoor Miles Without Stiles

Hiking

Disabled Ramblers Category Level 1.

For a serene amble through the woods on the edge of the moor, Longtimber Woods in Ivybridge is a great option. You’ll start from Station Road, where there’s free on-street parking, just near Brunel’s impressive railway viaduct. There are no public toilets here, though they can be found nearby in the Watermark Centre in Ivybridge.

The gravel path leads you gently alongside the River Erme, which features a series of small cascades. Keep an eye out for dippers who forage here and make the clear flowing river their home.

After 0.6 miles (1 km), there’s a picnic area which makes for a great place to pause with a flask of tea or a snack. After your break, head back to the start along the same route, this time with the flow of the water.

For the best colours, visit in the autumn when the leaves are on the turn, but before it gets too wet. Though fairly short and easy terrain, it’s best to take on this Tour in the drier months as the path alongside the River Erme can get really quite muddy.

The River Erme in Longtimber Woods

Highlight (Segment) • River

The track through Longtimber Woods to Pithill Woods is one of six routes across the national park marked as Miles Without Stiles.

As you might expect, these routes don't feature any stiles, and are designed to be accessible for a whole raft of users, including those with limited mobility, rides of all-terrain powered mobility scooters and families with younger children.

You can start your adventure on Station Road near the Brunel's viaduct and head into the woods following the west bank of the River Erme.

Bring some snacks or a flask of tea to enjoy at the picnic site before turning around to head back.

Pithill Wood

Highlight • Forest

This is a pretty woodland alongside the River Erme, just before it heads through Ivybridge to the south. There are several footpaths leading through it and it’s mainly earth underfoot so it can get muddy in winter. All the woodlands along this stretch of river are lovely and seem to blend in to one another.

The path alternately hugs the river and rises above it, allowing you to admire the Erme from every angle. There are stiles and some steps in this woodland.
