Haytor Quarry – Dartmoor Miles Without Stiles

Hiking

Disabled Ramblers Category Level 2/3.

This lollipop-shaped route features an out-and-back from the Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre at Haytor up to the Haytor Quarry, with a loop through the disused quarry past the pools and to the old trackbed of the Granite Tramway.

From the main car park, you take the path parallel to the main Haytor road before crossing carefully onto the tor side. With the rocky outcrop of Haytor to your left (which I often think looks like toes on a foot), follow the straight path up the hillside, which is marked with the Miles Without Stiles post.

When you reach the quarry, there’s a swing gate that gives you access to the route around the two pools. It’s a popular swimming spot in summer, but the leeches do put some dippers off! Early summer is the most scenic time to visit, when the lilies bloom on the water.

There’s another swing gate to exit the other side of the quarry, and then you follow the main track and grassy path on the left to reach the old granite tramway, which once transported stone down to Newton Abbot and Teignmouth docks for shipping.

Make your way around the quarry to complete the loop, rejoining the main track to head back down towards the visitor centre. You’ll have marvellous views towards the coast with Teignmouth and the English Channel visible on a clear day.

Miles Without Stiles: Haytor Quarry Track

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This track is one of six routes across the national park marked as Miles Without Stiles. As you might expect, these routes don't feature any stiles, and are designed to be accessible for a whole raft of users, including those with limited mobility, rides of all-terrain powered mobility scooters and families with younger children.

This straight track heads up from the car park a little further on from the Haytor Visitor Centre next to the main road up to Haytor Quarry, keeping the iconic rocks of Haytor on your left.

Dartmoor has a fascinating industrial past and its myriad disused quarries are some of the clearest evidence. Just to the east of the phenomenal Haytor Rocks, lies Haytor Quarry. Part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, this quarry is quite difficult to find, as it’s tucked away well out of sight if you’re just rambling about.

The granite removed from the quarry was transported on the granite tramway which ran from Haytor, through the enormous Stover family estate to be taken to the Channel via the Stover canal and shipped.

The quarry also resides in an area with plenty of evidence of ancient human habitation, with Bronze Age hut circles dotted around the immediate region.

Haytor Visitor Centre

Highlight • Parking

The visitor center is well located for the start of a walk to the iconic Haytor Rocks and other walks throughout this part of Dartmoor.

There are toilets, a parking lot, and the visitor center itself where you can ask questions about the area and walks. Worth a visit!
