Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to complete the Monte Bregagno loop?

The Monte Bregagno loop is a challenging hike that generally takes around 5 to 6 hours to complete. This estimate is for the round trip and assumes a good pace, not including extended breaks.

What is the difficulty level of this hike, and is it suitable for beginners?

This hike is considered difficult, classified with an 'EE' rating for experienced hikers. It demands good to excellent physical fitness due to its length and substantial elevation gain. It is not recommended for beginners.

Where does the Monte Bregagno loop trail start, and where can I park?

The trail typically starts from Monti di Breglia, which is a higher parking area accessible from Breglia. You will need to purchase a €3 ticket to access this parking area.

What kind of terrain can I expect on the Monte Bregagno loop?

The terrain varies, starting through birch woods and ferns, then transitioning to open, grassy slopes and ridges. You'll encounter rocky sections and switchbacks. While not technically difficult, some passages may require using your hands, and fitted ropes are present in particularly exposed areas. Sure-footedness is essential.

What are the main viewpoints and landmarks along the route?

You'll be treated to spectacular 360-degree views throughout the hike. Key highlights include the Lago di Como View, the quaint Sant'Amate Chapel at 1623m, and the summits of Bregagnino and Monte Bregagno itself, offering a breathtaking View of Lake Como from Monte Bregagno.

When is the best time of year to hike the Monte Bregagno loop?

The best time to hike this loop is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to October), when the weather is more stable and the trails are clear of snow. Always check local weather conditions before you go, as alpine weather can change rapidly.

Is the Monte Bregagno loop dog-friendly?

While the trail is generally accessible, its difficult rating, exposed sections, and potential for rocky terrain mean it might be challenging for some dogs. If you plan to bring your dog, ensure they are fit, well-behaved, and accustomed to strenuous hikes. Always keep them on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife.

Do I need a permit or pay any fees for this hike?

There are no specific hiking permits required for the trail itself. However, as mentioned, there is a €3 fee to access the parking area at Monti di Breglia.

What essential gear should I bring for this hike?

Given the difficulty and length of the hike, you should bring adequate footwear (sturdy hiking boots), appropriate clothing layers, plenty of water, and sufficient food. Trekking poles can also be helpful on the ascents and descents.

Are there any cafes or restaurants near the trailhead in Breglia?

Yes, Breglia village and the surrounding area offer some options for cafes and restaurants where you can refuel before or after your hike. It's a good idea to check their opening hours, especially outside of peak season.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Alta Via del Lario (rifugio Giovo - Rifugio Menaggio) and the Alta Via del Lario - Tappa 3.

Trail Reviews

February 14, 2023, monte Bregagno da breglia

Excursions for patient people. It starts from Breglia and after 700 meters of vertical forest you arrive at the little church of Sant'Amate at 1600 meters. The view opens to 360 degrees on Grigne, Legnone, San primo, the mountains of Val Masino etc... From now on the landscape resembles Tibet, therefore an expanse of grassy hillocks that slowly lead to an altitude of 2100m on Mount Bregagno. Excursions for patient people because you never get to Mount Bregagno hahaha there is always one more hill to gobble up
