This loop is considered a moderate hike. While some sections are accessible for all skill levels, others are steep and require good fitness. Be prepared for varied terrain and potentially strong winds, especially near the summit.
The trail features diverse terrain, including stretches of road, street, hiking paths, and other paths. You'll walk through deciduous woodlands, peaty and rocky ground, and rugged, heather-covered mountainside. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended, as parts can be quite soggy.
The starting point of the route is conveniently located next to a parking lot. You can find a highlight for View of Camlough Lake which is near the starting area.
You can expect expansive and picturesque views throughout the hike. From the Camlough Mountain Summit, you'll get beautiful uninterrupted vistas of the Cooley Mountains, Carlingford Lough, Slieve Martin, and Slieve Gullion. There are also good views of Camlough Lake and the rolling countryside from various points, including Gordons Lane.
Generally, dogs are welcome on trails within the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. However, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through areas with livestock or to protect local wildlife.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Camlough Mountain & Lake loop. It is freely accessible as part of the Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant conditions with milder weather and longer daylight hours. Autumn provides beautiful foliage. Be aware that parts of the trail can be soggy, especially after rain, so waterproof footwear is essential regardless of the season.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Ring of Gullion Way, which is a longer, established trail within the AONB.
Given the varied terrain and potential for strong winds, especially at the summit, we recommend bringing waterproof footwear, layers of clothing, and a windproof jacket. Water and snacks are also advisable for this moderate hike.
Yes, the Camlough area has a fascinating geological history. The rocks you'll see are of volcanic origin, formed over 400 million years ago from cooling molten rock, creating granodiorite, and later, dolerite. This ancient volcanic activity contributes to the unique landscape of the Ring of Gullion.
Yes, as the name suggests, the Camlough Mountain & Lake loop is a circular trail, bringing you back to your starting point.
