Highway 36 (North Boulder to Neva)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This section of Highway 36 (North Foothills Highway) is popular with cyclists linking up the edge of North Boulder (including the steep Lee Hill Drive) and the plentiful paved and gravel roads, and trails northeast of Boulder. Although there is a wide shoulder and plenty of other cyclists nearly all-year-round, please use caution when riding here; it is a highway after all and there are cars and large trucks moving at fast speeds.

Lefthand Canyon (36 to Olde Stage)

Highlight (Segment) • Canyon

The initial section of Lefthand Canyon from 36 is easier than the upper sections and a great place to warm up the legs for some climbing! As you follow Lefthand Creek, crossing over it a few times, be on the lookout for deer and other wildlife (especially on the descent!), along this scenic road.

24.0 km

After veering off of Lefthand Canyon onto James Canyon Drive, you can enjoy a long climb up (or fast, fun descent down) a road with a wide shoulder between steep cliffs and hills and a creek. Although this isn't a particularly long climb up to Jamestown it's consistent, so finally reaching Jamestown (and the Mercantile) is a welcome treat.

Jamestown Mercantile Café

Highlight • Cafe

The Jamestown Mercantile is a cute, cyclist-friendly cafe in a historic building. There is outside seating both right out front and across the road in the park. They have an expansive menu (jamestownmercantile.com/menu) and live music and events in the warmer months.

Super James (Jamestown to end of pavement)

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The "Super James" climb is one of the more notorious climbs in the area. Super James from Jamestown consists of about 1,800 of climbing in 6 miles with an average grade of 8%. This 4.4 mile section of Super James, between Jamestown and where the road turns to gravel, is where the majority of the hard climbing happens. The twisting nature of the road makes the hard climbing, with some moments being far over an average of 15%, feel even harder; you just can't see the next section of hill coming! Fortunately, you've had all of Lefthand and the climb up James Canyon Drive to warm up for this climb, which has

This final section of the notorious Super James climb is on gravel. In comparison to the previous section of Super James from Jamestown, this final push up to the Peak to Peak highway is fairly mellow with only an average grade of 1.3% over 2.15 miles on smooth gravel that is easily done on road bikes with tires over about 25mm. You get increasingly great views of the mountains as you climb up this section of Overland Road; an excellent reward at the end of a hard climb!

This section of the popular Lefthand Canyon is a long, but scenic climb with increasingly good views of the often-snowcapped Indian Peaks the closer you get to Ward. Ward is a tiny mountain town just off the Peak to Peak highway with a cyclist-friendly general store. This section is also super, super fun to fly down, but be aware deer in the road and cars.

Lee Hill Drive Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Lee Hill Drive is a popular and challenging climb that connects the intersection of Lee Hill with Olde Stage just outside of North Boulder, and Lefthand Canyon. The backside of Lee Hill (the Lefthand Canyon side) is a little nicer for climbing because there is less traffic than on the Boulder side where there is no shoulder on a series of initial switchbacks. Regardless of which way you go up Lee Hill, coming down the 1,400 foot climb is a real treat after the challenging journey up!
