Hiking

Embark on a moderate 7.5-mile (12.1 km) hike through the rolling chalk hills and valleys of the Chilterns, a journey that typically takes about 3 hours and 18 minutes to complete. You will gain 581 feet (177 metres) in elevation as you explore ancient woodlands like Coneybank Wood and Angling Spring Wood, alongside open farmland. The paths feature gentle undulations, but expect some steeper sections that require good fitness. Look forward to picturesque valleys, including the Misbourne Valley, and expansive views across the fields. In spring, these woodlands often burst with bluebells, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. You will also encounter stiles along the route.

This popular loop starts from Great Missenden, offering a convenient base for your adventure. While the paths are generally accessible, be aware that some sections may become muddy, especially after wet weather. Good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended for navigating the varied terrain. Consider visiting in spring for the bluebells or in autumn to witness the vibrant colors of the foliage.

The Coneybank Wood and The Lee loop is recognized as the most popular hiking route around Great Missenden, traversing well-known woodlands in the area. The region itself is rich in history; for instance, the village of The Lee has historical ties to Missenden Abbey, and a 13th-century chapel, known as The Old Church, still stands today. Great Missenden also boasts the 15th-century George Inn, the oldest inn in the village, offering a glimpse into local heritage.

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Just west of Great Missenden's Aylesbury Road, the path here descends (very picturesque views of the rolling hills) towards Coneysbank Wood. A beautiful and gentle walk, and easy on the legs.

The Lee Village Green

Highlight • Viewpoint

As English villages in the Chiltern Hills go, this one is one of the most attractive. This is the kind of place I tend to think of when I read Agatha Christie's Miss Marple.

The village name is Anglo-Saxon and means "a woodland clearing". Another little fun fact: Sir Arthur Lasenby Liberty (1843–1917), proprietor of the famous Regent Street (London) store, Liberty & Co., lived here and built a Manor house here in 1900. He was associated with the Art Nouveau style.

A very pleasant woodland with well-maintained paths (though it can be busy with cyclists) and some benches affording great views across the adjacent fields. Just a pleasant place to be for walkers of all varieties.
