Embark on a challenging touring bicycle loop from Beddgelert, taking you through the diverse landscapes of Eryri / Snowdonia National Park. This 44.2-mile (71.1 km) route offers extensive views across the park, including clear sights of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the serene Llyn Dinas. You will cycle through picturesque wooded vales, dramatic rocky slopes, and mountain passes, experiencing a significant 3868 feet (1179 metres) of elevation gain. The journey, typically completed in about 5 hours and 2 minutes, promises a rewarding experience amidst stunning Welsh scenery.

This difficult touring bicycle route is considered a hard bike ride, demanding a very good fitness level. Be prepared for substantial climbs, including the notably steep "Cwm Penmachno Climb." While primarily paved, some sections may be unpaved, featuring a mix of State Road, Path, and Cycleway. You can opt for the Roman Road Gravel Track to bypass a busy main road; it is generally rideable on loaded touring bikes with 35mm to 40mm tires, though it includes steep ascents.

What makes this loop particularly notable is its combination of natural beauty and the challenge it presents, connecting the distinctive towns of Blaenau Ffestiniog and Betws-y-Coed. It is a favored route among local touring cyclists for its varied Welsh landscape. The inclusion of gravel track alternatives, like the Dolwyddelan to Pont y Pant Gravel Route, provides options to avoid busier roads and experience different surfaces, adding to the adventurous character of the ride.

Beddgelert Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Presumably there was a bridge here for a long time that gave access from the north side of the river to the Augustinian priory of Beddgelert. In 1623 it was recorded that the bridge needed repairs and in 1778 it was repaired and widened. Much of the bridge appears to have been swept away in a flood of 1799 and was repaired again and doubled in width between 1802 and 1811.

Roman Road Gravel Track

Highlight • Cycleway

Beautiful gravel track to avoid part of the sometimes busy A498. The gravel is more or less rideable on a loaded touring bike (was ok on 35 and 40 mm tyres). Quite steep if you're going uphill.

It comprises a series of beautiful cascades on the River Llugwy, approximately one mile east of Betws y Coed, on the way to Capel Curig and just off the A5. The falls are surrounded by lush woodland. Betws-y-Coed Village

Highlight • Rest Area

A true outdoor lovers' mecca, Betws-y-Coed is a great gateway to Snowdonia National Park. Anyone who has driven into Snowdonia on the A5 will have noted its picturesque setting, its alpine character and its numerous gear shops, cafes, hotels and B&Bs.

Betws-y-Coed is surrounded by the gorgeous Gwydyr Forest, which boasts a variety of trails. Moel Siabod is prominent from many points in the village and it is only a short drive to starting points for Snowdon and the Glyderau.

Dolwyddelan to Pont y Pant Gravel Route

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Pleasant riding between Dolwyddelan and Pont y Pant station avoiding the main road. An alternative to the way marked route linking the village to Betws y Coed, with a bit less ascent. A couple of short rockier sections. Pretty good on a gravel bike. Occasionally a bit slippy at the end of the first bit of tarmac before the railway tunnel after a wet period.
